Look dude, you've obviously made your point in your previous posts. As was said earlier, some people like discussing this type of thing.

Here's an idea; If you hate this discussion so much, why don't you stop reading the thread???? One thing that pisses me off is reading a useful thread full of repetitive negative posts from people like you making it harder to find the info you are looking for; and now you're to the point where you are offending people. You made your point. Now its time to move on with your life. See ya

I posted some valuable content regarding how to get the best mileage possible. Take it if you want. If you (or anybody else) can't look past one word in that whole post then like I said, I'm sorry to offend anybody, but please try to develop thicker skin and ignore it.

Its not a matter of ignoring a post or "developing a thicker skin" its a matter of turning a one page thread full of useful (to some people) information into 5 pages of fluff full of useless conversations exactly like this one, which makes it harder to read and find what you are looking for.

If you don't have anything useful to say, don't say anything at all. Your original post was useful, the rest since them have not been, that's all I'm saying.

It has nothing to do with thick skin; you are asking me to just turn my ahead and ignore something that I am obligated to defend. Too many people just "turn their head".
Apology accepted - now let’s get on with things.

Pot calling the kettle... Your last couple of posts didn't contribute anything valuable to the original topic, either.

First of all, if people actually did try looking for this information, there wouldn't be as many new threads started about it. That somewhat makes your concerns about being able to find the information a moot point, doesn't it?

Secondly, your posts don't help the length of this discussion, which is still only 2 pages, not 5.

I dug up some notes I had on frictional losses (unfortunately the subscripts and superscripts did not copy over) that I thought might be of interest to some:

Effect of air resistance on car moving at increasing velocity

:dammit: You can't make a blanket statement like that. Did you not read a single thing I said? Set the cruise at 50mph in the mountains of Oregon or Washington and you will be lucky to get 15mpg out of it because the transmission will be downshifting to 3rd gear CONSTANTLY!

Ricky

You need to CHILL there Ricky and have an open mind! The one thing you are not taking into consideration is the HUGE difference between your experience and mine is due to the torque difference between V6 and the VVT-i V8.

Yes, with certain road conditions you could get better mileage, but you

Sorry if I broke the rules moderators and administrators, but I could not let this one go.

If you let that bother you than the internet will be stressful for you. Stress is caused by things you can not control.

I HAVE a V8, and yes, it WILL downshift to 3rd on a 7% grade at 50mph at >4000ft elevation through mountains when loaded down while using cruise control. By the time the vehicle loses enough speed due to lack of power, the throttle position will be such that by the time it does pull a downshift, it will have already applied enough throttle to drop a second gear before it picks speed back up.

Ricky

For some reason I thought you had the V6, sorry. Again, my VVT-i can pull 50mph in 4th up most all the mountains in my area without downshifting. But, I'm not talking about those altitudes or being loaded down. There is quite a bit of HP difference between the 03 and 05 V8s and about 10lbs of torque. I guess no matter what I say you will be adding more to the equation, 7% grade, 4K ft. altitude, loaded down, etc. What's next, pulling a trailer in snow?

Let me rephrase my reply; under normal road conditions and weather, without any load, at less then 1K ft on an average grade, with a VVT-i V8, using either 4th gear or 5th gear with the cruise set at 50mpg, I get the best mileage!

And if you have the patience and time to drive 50mph all day long... MORE POWER TO YA'!!! :D

Just don't be like the lady I nearly wanted to run off the road in Oregon who made it be known that SHE was doing 5mph OVER the speed limit and would not go any faster, nor would she move over.... If only she realized that the difference between 70mph and 80mph on the trip I was on equates to almost 5 extra hours of driving time.

I don't think I will be getting in anyone's way. I'll just say my other vehicle is capable of 200mph. I live by; "I feel the need, the need for SPEED!"

WOW!!

I have not checked on this forum for 3 days.

I started this thread with an intention to be informative. Not to get in the nerves of anybody. Let me say this again, (for whoever has complains about other people researching on fuel economy on a not fuel efficient car) as I said it at the beginning. If I want economy I can drive a 4 cyl Honda I have. I was not looking to save money on fuel when I bought the V8. However what is the negative point if I want to know how the car handles on different circumstances?
In a case like mine, where I drive on flat land, I mean FLAT 1200 miles a month with two baby girls in the back of my truck, respecting speed limit (55mph). It makes sense to save 10% on gas by driving at 50 mph rather than 65 mph.
I also thought that after spending some time doing that little project, others may want to use that info.

It really bothers me negative comments in a place like this. I do find threads with no useful info for me, but that is fine. I rather have people being enthusiastic and sharing anything they want because that keeps the site alive. Many have said this. Owning a 4runner has a big plus, you have this forum to come, share and learn. It makes us all part of a club which we are proud of. (Please correct me if I am talking out of my head). You don

You can use windows down in speeds lower the 35mph and A/C over 35mph. It also good idea open the windows if you have to drive to the mall across the street (jus not enough time to cool down the vehicle, usually it take 10-15 min to do it). If you using A/C, open the windows and drive ~1 mile with windows down to let the hot air escape from the vehicle, then put A/C on.

I've got a question for you...

And this isn't meant in any sort of negative way... It's just a different aspect of this topic...

If you could gain 4 or more hours of your life to do other things with your daughters at the cost of $13-15 per month, would it be worth it to you? Would it be worth it to perhaps have a little extra time to do that other project you're trying to get done that you just can't seem to find the time for?

I don't know about you or anybody else here, but the 10% savings, based on 1200 miles driven per month, that's what it equates to in hard dollars and time out of your life.

Honestly, 4 hours of my life is worth more to me than $13-15... To me, I'd rather have those extra hours of my life to do other things and spending just a couple extra dollars is worth it to me. That's why it bothers me that people love to spend so much extra time in a car by driving slowly (especially below a posted speed limit, which seems to be a HUGE epidemic here in San Antonio where I live). The difference between obeying the speed limit between my house and my parent's house (25 miles away straight down one highway across town) and doing a moderate 70-75mph all the way across town (which is very safe) is about 7-8 minutes. In that amount of time, I can usually have the car unloaded and be doing something else. Over many years of one's life, those extra 10mph slower REALLY add up to a lot of unnecessary time spent behind the wheel. Obviously, I am not talking about doing it when conditions are unsafe or when there is too much traffic to make this possible, but it doesn't sound like that is an issue with the type of commuting you are doing.

Just my $.02 from a philosophical standpoint.

Ricky

Ricky,

Your points are very valid from your perspective. If you feel like spending time in the car driving is useless, or have some other importat things to do, yes hurry as much as you can (safely that is).

I actually enjoy driving, specialy the 4R. That is why I don't drive my accord anymore. Heck, I find excuses to drive. So for you 10 minutes out of the car are worth it. To me 10 extra minutes singing (or trying to sing and making my daughters suffer) are actually enjoyable.

Man, you have no idea how much I enjoy having those kids with me, I actually wish that it takes me longer to drive.

I know what is being in a hurry or being bothered by a slow moving vehicle. Just remember that speed limit is the maximum you can legally drive, not the minimum (except on highways were is very well signaled). My fault if I don't like somebody driving slow... because they have the right to do it if they please.

You stated something before, which is true, no matter what I do on the 4R I will never get a good economy. 100% agree with you. I also agree that $15 bucks a month is not really much. But you keep missing the point. The point was to find the most efficient speed and if I can use it then I will.

Our perspectives are different, nothing wrong with that. By the way thanks for the different approach on the comments.

Fred.
