Wind Noise 2004 Sport

I've had mine since March. I first heard a weird windnoise yesterday. I was not shocked as I was doing 70 mph into a 45 mph gale. The noise I had was from the driver's side mirror - the wind rushing between the mirror and the post of the door.
I've not had any other windnoise unless the sunroof is open. Then it's loud but not too bad. On my commute in today, there was no noise and things were back to normal.

Yeah ive had my sport since Oct 04 and havent noticed anything really. Even running 110 down the interstate over the holidays i really didnt hear anything that bothered ME, i might not be as picky since this is my first car that ive drove off the lot with 0 miles!!! so maybe ill notice it now, gee thanks guys! JK ill let yall know if i do though

Almost every vehicle with side mirrors has wind noise.
The problem is that the T4R is so quite that the slightest wind noise can be heard.
I also notice that running over cracks in the road the tires really seem loud, you
just notice them more because of the quiet ride.

The "right" place for the crossbars
IIRC, there are actually specific locations suggested for the crossbars to yield minimum wind noise. They're marked by dots on the inside of the rails that run fore/aft. One for the front crossbar and one for the rear. The locations are not at the extreme front or rear. I believe the operating manual mentions this somewhere. If you experiment further, please let us know if it helps.

I just noticed a noise that I created. 
I installed the Canadian Bug guard about a week ago, and just noticed this morning that it is vibrating at speeds over 70. The guard isn't resting on the center bumper on the hood, and is just slightly above it, which is causing a vibration.
I guess I need to adjust the bumper location on the hood.

Per Micablue3, I found the marks on the inside rails of the roof racks. I moved the racks to those positions ( the manual does reference this), but it had no effect on the wind noise.
I am sure the noise is coming from the windshield, mirror, or sun roof area. I am going to look over other 2004 Sports, and see if mine is different in any way.

I want to follow-up on this thread as promised. As a quick re-cap, above 45 MPH, I get a bunch of wind noise coming from the windshield and visor area.
The Toyota dealer had my 4Runner for the entire day. They were going to tape things up and see if they could find anything. By the odometer, they drove 10 miles.
Result was no problem found. Service Manager claimed he test drove several 4Runners from the lot, and they all were the same. He also said that he owned a 4Runner, and never noticed it until I mentioned it. And that is just how 4Runners are!
Needless to say, I am not pleased. Not sure what my next steps are on this. If this was a subtle problem, I wouldn't care, as wind nose is subjective. But from my experience, and I have seen similar posts here, the noise is real.

Just to chime in here. I don't really notice any wind noise out of the ordinary on my 05 SE. But on my 03 I have the wind deflectors put on my windows and I notice a BIG different. There was so much noise that you could barely talk in the vehicle. If you go with these use the in-channel ones as they greatly decrease the wind noise that is caused. Just my $.02.

i got one of these b/c my wife liked the way they look. it was always a pain to clean, especially underneath. the truck got really muddy one time and i had to take it off to clean underneath. i then noticed that it had scratched the hell out of the paint. i didn't make any differance what-so-ever with respect to wind noise so, in essence, it looked good and scratched the truck. i would not recommend putting one of these on.

I happen to think the 4 Runner has a lot of noise. I have the 04 SE also. I notice the noise at modest to highway speeds.
It is partly a function of the shape of the truck and the mirrors, rack, etc. that catch the wind. There also probably is not enough soundproofing in some areas.
I also have a problem with wind noise with the sunroof open (opening the rear window a bit helps some). When I reach up and depress the spring-loaded plastic piece at the front of the sunroof, the wind noise drops dramatically.
The 4 Runner is a nice vehicle, but it leaves a lot to be desired in these areas.

I think my 4R is quieter than my mom's Pilot. My accord was louder too.. I expect noise, but I think the 4R is fairly quiet for what it is. It is pretty quiet, I don't really find myself adjusting stereo volume to hear over the noise.Lone Ranger said:
