I have plenty of wind noise, but am not sure where it is coming from. I think it is from above the windshield, and caused by body moulding or trim that sticks up near the top of the windshield. Starts about 45 MPH. I do not remember hearing wind noise during test drives, but maybe I missed it.
I posted a thread on this subject a few months ago, nothing conclusive.
Next service, I am going to request that the dealer investigate the wind noise. I will post results here.

A lot of people have complained about wind noise on the 4th-gen trucks (including myself!).
The best explaination I've heard is that Toyota, apparently trying to save a buck, chose to use thinner windshield glass than in the past.
As a result, the turbulence caused by the rain channels along the sides and top of the windshield is transmitted into the cabin more easily. Some have argued it's the roof rack crossmembers, which *can* add wind noise, but in my opinion not nearly as much as the thin windshield glass.
I almost didn't buy the truck because of this, but in the end decided I would just have to live with it since no other vehicle fit the bill like a 4runner.
But it still bugs me.

This is one of those things that puzzles me because the reports vary so widely. I've always thought my 4Runner was very quiet for the type of vehicle it is. Considering the tires, high profile and squarish shape, plus lots of non-smooth features such as running boards, roof rack, big mirrors, etc., I'd say it's very quiet in relative terms and surprisingly quiet in absolute terms.
Maybe it says something about the other vehicles you drive or have driven recently. If you've been motoring around in a Lexus sedan, the 4Runner will sound pretty loud.

I haven't noticed any wind noise yet but my engine seems to be a little loud when just idling. I didn't think it was like that when I first got it but I guess I just have the new car jitters. I took it to the dealer and had a service guy listen to it and he said it was normal. We got into another 05 SE V6 and listened to it and I swear it was a little quieter. Maybe it was because that one only had 16 mi's on it and mine has almost 7,800.

Surprisingly, the Tundra was quite a bit quieter when driving at highway speeds, and I guess that is what I am comparing against. Does anyone know a good way to measure (on the vehicle) the thickness of windshield glass? How does the T4R compare to say the Sequoia? Or the Lexus 470? I'd for one would be interested to know.
I have a 2006 SR5 and I also noticed the wind noise from the upper part of the windshield when going above 45MPH. It was very hard to detect the source initially because you have to at sufficient speed (45 or higher) and very quite to hear it. But it is definitely there. It is annoying.
Toyota is losing its quality touch. How come some of the problems discovered on the 2003 models are still around for 2006? (like the rear seat noise?)

My friend has a 2001 Sequoia and it is actually MUCH quieter at 50 - 70 MPH than our 4th gen 4Runners. Which makes me want to go get some dynamat and dynamat the whole car and see if that helps. Although, I have heard much louder cars than this.

My 4Runner is also "whisper quiet" at most any speed, for an SUV anyway. Sure, it ain't a Lexus sedan - but probably puts a Blazer, Explorer or Pathfinder to shame.
I only experienced some wind noise once when the vehicle was new and I took a trip to NY with it. It was easily solved by moving the adjustable roof rack cross rails. I slid them back so that they lined up with the little white arrows and - Voila! - problem solved completely.
You might want to try that little trick.
If that is the worst gripe about the 4Runner, I guess we all made a good choice!

It's not the cross bars. Mine were lined up perfectly with the arrows.
Some of you may not be as sensitive to wind noise. Everyone's hearing is slightly different. But the wind noise is definitely there on mine.
Feels like something like the weather seal is not 100%. I am going to take it back to the delaer and let them fix it. Very annoying for a new car. My second trip back already (first was for the rear seat latch repair, also a 2003 problem).

I can't hear the wind over the Magnaflow 
some people have better hearing (like me). When you are traveling at 45 MPH or higher, there are lots of road noise but the fact that Toyota 4 runner has wind noise (it's basically a leak or poor seal) does not change simply because someone cannot hear the noise.
Off to the dealer I go...
My comment on Toyota not as good as before is probably true, the 2nd generation of Japanese car makers are not as dedicated anymore nor are they fanatic about quality like the old days.

Well.......... I am not sure how good my hearing is because I know I have damaged it somewhat over the years. Loud concerts, forgetting my muffs when trap and sporting clay rounds, chainsawing without muffs or plugs and running with my iPod has probably all contributed.
But I can tell you for sure that my '93 4runner that I still own never, even when new, sounded as quiet at my '06 Sport V8. I love music and I find myself driving my '06 A LOT with the sound system off just because I like how quiet it is. I also like the muted factory rumble from the V8 too which I don't get to enjoy with the radio on.
Your post seems to be attempting to make a link between quality and cabin noise level, which sometimes have nothing in common. But, I will agree any kind of intrusive noise from your car can drive anyone nuts. I have found my new 4runner is one of the quietest cars I have driven and this includes my mother's Lexus.
Wind noise prior to '06 must have been an issue otherwise Toyota would not have made the change to use thicker glass starting with '06, however, this to me seems a design issue which I would not consider part of manufacturing quality.

I have 2003 v8 4x4 for less than a year. I did not notice or hear any window noise for the entire summer simply because I have my wife with me all the time towing the boat back & forth from the river
. But, last holiday weekend, on the way from the party (just me & myself with a few beers) I noticed heavy noise from both front side windows. On top of that, there's a water leakage on the driver side windshield. I took her to the dealer during lunch hour today and was told that it would cost me $550.00 to re-sheild the windshield so that when it rains, the water won't get inside. I'm worried about thing gets rusted inside. Perhaps $550.00 is worth getting it fixed. What do you think?Cheers
