The factory "tint" is really just colored glass.

if you are have a shop do it, just request the "limo tint", that's usually the darkest ... but FYI, check with your Police Dept first
pretty sure they just put it on right on top of whatever you already have
around here, you can NOT have the drivers or passengers side window that dark (to protect the Police)
some shops around here won't mention that part, and charge you to do the whole vehicle, then the driver gets a fix it ticket ... or you can scrap it off right there on the side of the road and the cops won't issue a ticket
either way, people shouldn't have to get in trouble or pay for something that shops should stop you from doing in the first place

Personally I don't give a rat's ass about my state's tint laws. 6 years in and I'm still rolling with limo tint on top of the OEM colored glass.

A good tint/stereo shop should be able to help you with the following:
They should know the local law and be able to inform you about it.
They should also have samples of different darkness of tint, colors, etc. on glass that you can take out to put on your windows to see what you like.
Some may warranty it for life, or a couple years.
I highly suggest against "limo tint" usually around 5%, meaning only 5% of light coming in. The police do not like it because it is so dark they can't see what is going on inside. As a courtesy, I will even roll my windows down so the police can see inside even if my tint is legal. It shows you have nothing to hide.
In WI I run 20-17% on everything but the windshield and the rear window, which really makes the vehicle look nice. Law is 50% front 2, 35% rears, windshield is illegal. Your laws may differ. If you get caught running darker, you will have so many days to take it off and show the police. I have had Troopers pull out a light meter on me to check my windows when I used to run them pretty dark.
Mine isn't too dark but still noticeable, even though I am still breaking the law. The reason I don't do the rear window is because the darker the tint the harder it is to see at night out the back when backing up.

one thing to remember too, is at night it is more difficult to see. Some people roll windows down to see especially in parking lots, and backing up. just something to keep in mind.

i have been wanting more tint for about a month now that its starting to get hotter. i have the factory tint now. i am going to go with limo in the backs, and probably 20% in the fronts.
az law is 35%, but its too hot here in the summer for anyone to care. the darker yours are the luckier you are. hahaha.
i was quoted 139 +tx with a 1 year warranty, and another place said 185 including tax with a lifetime warranty.
i will probably go with the lifetime warranty. ive seen too many rides out here with the bubble effect and it looks like s**t. i cant stand it... ocd. that and the business was way better than that of the cheaper place.

some shops only do the "legal" tint. but some go with whatever you tell them to. it varies. and if you put the same % all the way around, your backs will still look darker. if your wanting to make them all the same percent, the shop you choose should be able to calulate what percents you need and where. obviously lighter tint in the back and more up front for an even look.

When you say "get the tint yourself" do you mean that you're going to buy it and have them install it?
I don't think I'd do that.
Matching the fronts to the rears can be hard. The windshield lets in a lot of light that it makes it difficult to find the right percent to balance all of the windows.

20 percent is really close to being an exact match for the back window, if thats what you want. Its nearly impossible to match everything exact. im pretty picky about everything matching, and 20 percent i can live with.

I got 5% on the front 2 and 15% on the rest. It looks good and it's even all the way around. It's dark, so if you don't have good eyes you may want to go lighter because you'll struggle to see at night. The shops around here will do anything you want. If it's illegal, you don't get a receipt.

you could Always tell the shop you want it as dark as legally possible, if thats your goal
and if something comes up between you and the Police- you can make the shop fix it

You guys ever have issues with peeling or sort of "warping" in terms of look of the tint? I've always been hesitant to go with window tinting because all I ever see is poorly done ones, or they always seem slightly off.

here in az that happens often, the heat makes it bubble. usually at the 3 to 4 year mark. the shop i am going with is giving me a lifetime warranty. so i wont have to worry about that.
