Window Tinting

Has anyone had aftermarket tinting done to their 4runners? If so, are there any issues I should look out for, or certain products that may be better? Should the rear side windows be taken out to do a better job?

Thanks.

Most Tint shops these days are cutting tint with a plotter so there shouldn't be any problems there. If you are looking for a dependable Tint shop, call a BMW or Mercedes dealership, or another high end shop, and ask who does their tinting. They always have customers that want to buy their car with the windows tinted, so they will have a good source.

If you do a search for "Tint" on this site you will find some other threads that might help you out.

Had mine done the 1st week I had the thing home. A must here in sunny FL. I also had them add the "sun shade" it goes across the windshield. Go as dark as the law allows - why not. I have had my last 3 cars/truck done at the same shop. Never a problem - had the truck for 6 years, when I sold it the tint was just as good as the 1st day it was put on. I would find a place that gives a warenty. You neve know. Stay away from the cheep tint places.

I had my 2 front windows tinted @ 35% just last month. It's a relatively close match if viewed from the outside. However, the stock front windows already has a light green tint to it (most likely the UV filter). So getting a perfect match might not be feasible. Besides, the rear are @ 20% (darker) and the front are @ 35% so matching them will require the front to be 20% as well. Local regulations prohibits this in my state. I believe the rear tint are smoked into the glass and I don't think it can be removed, I could be wrong. One last comment, I wear polarized sunglasses and with the original front windows, there were no reflection/haze at all. Now with the tints in place, I see a faint rainbow (color spectrum) when I look through the glass from the inside. There's no distortion or haze at all, but I see the colors! :D

3M <--- excellent company, excellent tint.

most will offer lifetime warranty against discoloring, bubbles, warping, etc.

I have 20% in the fronts... and an additional 15% on the already-tinted rear windows.

I had mine done when I first got my 4Runner. I had it done at a place in Huntington Beach, they did a great job.

Some things to look out for:
* When using metallic tint be carefull when tinting the back windows because the antenna is built in to the two back windows.
* The factory tint is not really tint, it is just colered glass. There is no heat-rejection on that type of glass.
* be careful about how much you tint, cops check for that type of thing, at least in the OC they do so watch out.

I had 22% tint done to my front windows by a local comapnay and i love it...really makes my Runner stand out from the crowd

I have 10% on the front windows and 5% on all the rest and it definetly makes a difference with interior temps. I hade mine done by a local shop that uses Llumar brand tint and it's the same tint I had on my Eclipse for over 8 years and only had one issue with a loose window that caused a corner to slightly peel but that was fixed under warranty with no questions asked.
