windows dont work after battery change

So i tried to change my own battery with the help of a mechanic friend. It took less then 5 min and I was impressed at how easy it was to do.

Now that its been changed my auto windows wont go up or down. They still go up or down when you hold the button just not the auto function anymore. I was told I may have to reset something. I read an article about the body control module BCM which controls the window feature. It said i need to reset it or more problems could arise.

did i just screw my self over with this one?

You have to go up N down 3 times to reprogram it. If not, give it a couple of days, the computer will reset for you, eventually.

Just as "having fun" noted, just roll down/up the window 3 or 4 times and your good to go. I don't think the computer controls the auto function on the driver window.

You'll also need to roll down your back window as well so it will reset the back auto down/up and wiper and defrost.

I just replaced my battery too last week and didn't even notice the window auto window not working until I saw this thread. I had to open and close the sunroof too to get it to work as mentioned before.

Yeah, that's usually how it goes... all fine and dandy until it won't close and when you try it has this lovely gravely crunching noise. Then you have to gut the gear under the motor, cut the cables to move it closed so you don't get water in the vehicle because it's the one day in summer a veritable typhoon is coming. All that to get it to the dealer (hopefully no one figured out that now they can just slide your sunroof open and get into the vehicle!) and get the bill to fix it.

Sunroofs are just an investment in future repairs from what I have seen, better to never acknowledge their existence and save yourself money down the line in my honest opinion.

Is the sunroof thing a 4th gen issue, or all 4runners? Between my kids and me, we own 5 4runners ('94, 2x'97's, '04, and '06), with a combined total of over 1 million miles. All have sunroofs with nary a hiccup so far. And we use them all the time. What really is the failure rate on these things?

You don't need to roll them up and down 3 or 4 times. All it takes is starting from a fully closed window, open it all the way without releasing the button, then close it all the way without releasing the button. Now the auto function will work again. I have done this several times over the years and it never takes more than once. (unless I let go because sometimes I forget what I'm doing in the middle of it lol)

I just had to unhook my battery for an electrical mod. I had to do the driver window and the rear window 3 full cycles each for it to work. I tried doing it just once on both windows and it didn't work.

when you guys do these relearn, do you guys have the door open?
try with the door close, open, and when it open all the way hold it for 10 seconds, then up and hold it for another 10, dont let go during the relearn.
