Windshield cost question

Just got done searching posts on windshield replacement and found cost from $300 to $1200. A local glass shop here in NE Ohio quoted me $150 with labor to replace mine on a '99 Limited. Any ideas why the huge price difference? Will quality be that much better with the pricey ones? I didn't check anywhere else because I've had others replaced here on other vehicles with no problems.
Thanks.

I would say the price is reflective of the product they will use, and also just variations among shops. Is this not covered by insurance where you live? I would insist on a Toyota factory windshield and the factory trim. I had one put in a Tacoma and the windshield did not line up perfectly and instead of my nice rubber rain channel they put on a generic rubber strip.

Here in Pennsylvania, windshields are covered under insurance - you just have to pay the deductible (usually $100 if you have decent insurance). But, most of the local glass guys will work with you on eliminating the deductibles too.

The problem is that you do not get to 'pick' your windshield. So, you're essentially getting a piece of sh-t glass. That's what I got twice. In fact, one of them leaked too. The first stone chip that hit's them will spider-web them too.

It's a no win situation. Unless you want to shell out about a grand on a good one.

I agree to requesting PPG. If that is not available or too costly insist on OEQ. (Original Equiptment Quality). There are diffences in the cheaper windshields. They are usally thinner. This causes more wind and road noise and they are more vulnerable to crack and chip badly when hit my rocks, debris etc. They also sandpit bad. I reccomend Safelite. I work for Fortune 500 Insurance company and we use them for all of our clients. They also are great at price matching. Just tell them what you were quoted elsewhere and they will get the price pretty close. They also warranty it fo life against leaks and wind noise.

oh by the way, when I had the windshield in my 98 Prelude replaced (due to massive damage caused by concrete debris from a truck), I requested PPG-glass and got it. My buddy worked for PPG and made the recommendation. This was done under warranty, and I happen to live in PA.

Good luck!
