Windshield cracked!!!

So was in Tahoe area this past weekend and my windshield developed a crack on the way home. SUCKS! I didnt hear anything hit the windshield, and was thinking it could be from temperature stress. Couldnt see an impact mark, but if it was hit by something it was pretty small. At the possible impact area, there is no divet or shatter marks. My 15k service is coming up and im asking to have it looked at by someone from corporate to see if might be covered by warranty. If not................does anyone know any reputable installers that go to you or a reputable shop in the Northern California area? I dont want any half ass installers touching my rig. thanks in advance!

Welcome to the club. there are a few (or more than a few) threads in the 5th Gen group that talk about how delicate the windshield is. I had mine cracked about a month after i purchased my SR5. There are many others who have similar stories. I doubt that it is actually temperature that is the cause, unless you live somewhere where the temps swing WAAAYY up, then WAAY down. I thought the same, again as have many others, until i watched the OEM get removed, and found the tiniest of dings as the cause of the spreading crack across the glass.

My best suggestion, just go thru a local Google search, or even the phone book, and find a local shop who will do what you need done. i found one locally that even was able to get me a replacement windshield with the wiper-heater element, so i didnt loose that feature.

Needless to say, ive gone 2 years, and have heard several taps from stones, and the replacement windshield has been just fine.

Where the crack splits 3 ways at the bottom is most likely your point of impact. This will not be covered under warranty, so thats a wasted trip to the dealer imo. Ive had good luck with Safelite in the past but others haven't, so ymmv.

Yea thats waht i figured, but when i slid a pen tip over it i cant feel the divet, so must have been pretty small. I was going to the dealer for the 15k service anyway, so i thought id just kill 2 birds.

The temp stress i was thinking was from it being freezing out side and warm in the cabin. Time to search for installers.

Nah, not temp stress. Gotta think about all the guys that run these in cold climates, especially in the great white north. I recall seeing a -36 or something in another post recently. :twitch:

does your auto insurance not cover your windshield? i figured CA would require that.

They would. I have AAA full coverage. I was mainly asking for reputable shops that fellow 4runner owners have experiences with. I have found alot of places with great ratings, but i thought i just ask here also.

Yea i figure that. I know its a long shot, but just in case. you never know.

be lucky you're not in Colorado, you'll see a cracked windshield on almost every other car here, especially during the winter time since they lay pebbles instead of chemicals on the road to provide traction. Before I bought my SR5, both the wife and I had an accord. I bought both in Dec. 2015 until the day I traded in my accord (Jan 2nd 2017) for the SR5, between both cars, we went through 5 windshields

AAA will cover it but keep in mind: 1) You have to pay deductible and 2) You have to file a claim with own policy which is bad for you. GL

some people are way too nervous about rate, unless you are getting a new windshield monthly or something don't worry about your rate increasing. and lower that deductible and use your insurance, you're paying for it so you might as well

I agree. I have no problem using my insurance. Just more interested in shops. I posted this in the norcal thread also, but figured id get more visibility here. The warranty is a long shot. Im not banking on it. I just thought it wouldn't hurt.

I turned on my defroster one day and 20 min later noticed a growing crack. When I had it replaced the local shop showed me the tiniest of dings that was at the very bottom and where the crack spread outward from. I went non OEM glass and have no issues since. Toyota glass is not made by Toyota anyway.

Damn! No kidding. I have driven a ton around CA for last almost 20 years and never had this happen. <knock on wood>

I think i am at my 4 or 5th windshield since Jan 6th, 2014 date of purchase. AZ freeways are notorious for debris and I'm glad it was rocks and not ladders or couches! I had a 3" lifted titan for 4 years and replaced the windshield once. I am guessing the T4R angle is prone to rocks hitting it.
I have glass coverage which I think is a little bit over $10/month.

i have had good luck with safelite they come to your home or work and do it
we were living in Wyoming and had to replace windshield almost every year
