Windshield Rust Repair

Picked up a '97 about 6 months ago as a project car and I knew there was some issues with rust around the upper corners of the windshield. Finally got around to removing the old cracked windshield, removed some of the rust and this is what we found(two holes that go all the way through the body). I don't have a welder and have never welded... Is there a way to fix this so it won't allow water in without welding in a new piece? Can I clean them out and fill them with some sort of filler? What would you do? Thanks.

You could use body filler. However, you better off probably replacing that panel with a non rusted through one. Not easy at all to get into the inside and repair as well so it will just continue to rot up from underneath.


The 3rd gen collision manual shows you have those panels are put together.


So if welding cant be done body filler and coat the inside of that piller with rust inhibitors. That way the rot will slow down or stop.

Thanks... Going to try to slow down the rust. The drivers side A-pillar is the the only one that has rusted all the way through. I am wondering if I inject POR-15 in there if that'll help with what's going on that I can't see.

What can you get at if you pull the plastic of the A pillar in the inside. Can you see the rot from inside?

There's a pinch weld on the bottom and another piece of the body behind that spot, so I can't see those spots with the A Pillar molding removed, but none of the area behind the molding shows any sign of rust.

I kinda figured that area would be tough to see. Nothing you can do from that side then.

Por-15 sells a product that is intended for just your application. I've not used it but the description shows it being used for window rust repair. Maybe it'll do the trick.

That would be the easiest way to fix it. I was hoping the underneath would have exposed but not in this case.

If it works as well as their paint does, it might be a pretty good solution. I've got some painted spots pushing 7 years old now and it looks as good as the day I did it.

Thanks. Funny you mention that... I picked some up(as well as their primer) yesterday at my local Summit Racing. I just basically injected it in to the holes and then used it to fill a little on the bottom. This morning it looked great, the holes are filled and the this stuff doesn't appear to have shrunk at all. As near as I can tell this stuff is just a much thicker version of their Rust Preventative Coating.
