Windshield Suggestions?

A few days ago I got hit by a BIG rock and got a quarter-sized hit on my windshield. This morning it took off and cracked side to side.

I have glass coverage ($50 deductable) and will call in the morning to arrange a replacement. However is there anythign special I should ask about? I see a few people talk about leaks from replacements. I have a great local glass shop that has replaced glass on other cars for me over the years without a hitch.

Thoughts? Do I (can I?) request OEM glass? Anyone have any tips to make sure I get this done right the first time?

OEM is prohibitively expensive. I had Safelite do mine over the summer. Guy did a decent job. Only gripes were that they marred up the drivers side A-pillar a little bit (I was going to take it off before dropping it off, but figured they'd do it anyways), and left old rubber shavings around that I thought they could've done a better job cleaning up.

Overall, no problems. No wind noise or leaks. It really comes down to the installer, not the company. With all glass pretty much being equal, it really comes down to how well the installer does in prep and application. Go to a place with a good rep.

I'm in the same boat as you! Many months ago, a rock hit my windshield and it's been slowly expanding ever since. Then, last night I came out to my car from a friends house. The temp had dropped last night to the coldest it's been this year so far: 38 degrees and 'small' 4" crack I had on the passenger side of my windshield now went all the way across. :rant:

Now I'm looking for a new windshield as well and somehow I doubt my insurance will cover it, since I have a $500 deductable usually, although I have to check my comp deductable to see if that's less maybe?

OEM seems super expensive. Are the safe-light glass the same kind of glass, or is it less breakable?

The good news is that the windshield is cheap. If you don't have glass coverage don't go through insurance, there is no need. I've replaced mine twice in the 2 years I've had the truck (thanks Winter!). I think the last invoice I saw from Safelite was between $200 and 250, for a windshield it's pretty cheap (although I did go through insurance w/glass coverage).

OEM was not a concern to me, chances are you'll be replacing it again if it happens once. Especially in snowy areas. I did have the 2nd one crack on me due to incorrect installation, but they were back the next day with a new one and he got it right. Oh and they are plenty strong, I had a rock hit me that I swear was the size of a quater and going to pass right through into the passenger compartment, but dink! and not even a scratch. (But that little pebble 2 months later had the right trajectory I guess).

OEM is about ~900 bucks for the part alone. Insurance companies won't cough up that much over what the aftermarket sellers cost.

And I can't see paying that much out of pocket..

I have a small glass deductible ($50) and it turns out my insurance wants me to use Safelite so I'm calling now to set up an appointment.

This is no the place I've used in the past so we'll see how it goes.

Well, Safelite was VERY nice to deal with on the phone, hopefully their workmanship is equally good. They could have done it today but I can't align personal schedules until Wednesday. I'll update then.

Safelite did the windshield on my Audi and did a great job...hope all goes well.:cowboy:
