Windshield tint on a *WHITE 4R* ?

Hello!

I searched for windshield tint on white 4R's (4th gen) but I couldn't find much except a 3rd gen with windshield tint.

Currently, I have 20% tint front windows with 3% rear windows. I'm interested in darkening my front windows just a little bit more to match my limo tint in the back because right now it looks silly with one tint not matching real closely to the other tint. However, I did want to take on the opportunity to tint my windshield at the same time when darkening the front windows so I was wondering if anyone had pictures of their white 4R's that had their windshield tinted. I am leaning toward 50%, but I am considering 35% also Seeing at night with tint is not an issue at all as I used to have limo tint all around in my 3rd gen except the windshield. I was also thinking of adding a 3% limo tint with the width of 3" strip along the top of the windshield on top of the 35%/50% tint.


If anyone has their windshield tinted on their 4R's but a different body color, feel free to post and show off your ride/windshield. Obviously white would be nice as I have a white 4R but feel free to if you want to post ! Thanks


Note:And yes, I do know windshield tint is absolutely illegal in the state of Virginia. I'm very well aware of the tint laws here in VA as I was ticketed few times

I have a black 05 Limited with my front windshield @ 50% right now. I think it's perfect for what I want and doesn't draw too much attention. I've only gotten pulled once in a small town in Florida, but I blame it on the fact that it was cloudy out, making my tint look worse than it actually is.
I can post a picture of it if you want, but I'm just black not white ;):
 
You need to put at least another layer of 15% of your front windows.

I have 45-50% on my front windshield. There's no way I would go darker than that.
 
I would stick with the 50%. If you go any lower it's only a matter of time before you get a big ticket.

I used to have 30 on my windshield.

Plus, it's that much harder to "see" at night when you're driving and especially difficult if there aren't many city lights around....

@03ToyotaFlo - Yeah when I searched for windshield tint, it seems like everyone preferred 50% or higher to avoid law enforcement detection (getting pulled over etc) which made me lean toward that particular number rather than 35%. The only reason why I thought about geting a windshield tint is because I saw a white SUV benz (probably a '09-'10 model) and it was completely limo tinted all around...I never saw anything so sexy like it.

@ClemsonFan - Thanks man! It has been a while since I have heard from you. I used to have a 3rd gen, and I believe you helped me out with some questions I had at the time. Surprised to see you lurking around the wrong forum...;) As for adding another layer; they only have 3%, 20%, 35%, 50% options available and I'm guessing 20% would be the ideal tint to use to add another layer on top of the existing 20%?

@snow - So racist, but funny at the same time! It's always great when people can crack jokes about things like that :) gotta have happiness somehow in your life! If you would post the picture, then that would be great! I must say don't waste your time uploading if it's not a quality picture :P I'd like to be able to see the windshield tint (though it might not be visible easily via a picture, but who knows)

Yeah, 20% will work. Anything to get those fronts darker.

If you do get the windshield done make sure they do the entire thing. I have about a 1/8th strip at the bottom of mine where you can tell it's tinted. I didn't notice it until it was too late to take it back.

What happened to your 3rd Gen?
 
I'm sure you came across a thread already in the 3rd gen regarding my 4R but to help jog your memory, I drove into a brick-layered mailbox at a possibly high rate of speed where I completely demolished the mailbox as well as the city light pole next to it. The frame wasn't bent, but damages outweighed the value of the car with 182k miles on it or something. Although the dealership did an extensive testing to see what parts were damaged, I'm sure they included parts that wasn't even impacted by the mailbox but to repair my 4R it would have cost about 4 grand and another 3 grand for labor. Because I received such an expensive estimate to repair my 4R which was my wish to do because I wasn't ready to give up the 4R, my father ultimately decided to get rid of the 4R and scoop me another one. I'm very fortunate he didn't see the damages in person because I think he would have freaked out since he is currently on an international assignment with a private banking company. I traded the 4R at Carmax where they bought it from me only for $1,000 (my mother works there and she told me that they would have only paid $500 for the truck since it was not drivable but because of the fact that she is well respected and liked by many employees at that particular location, they did not mind adding another $500 when buying the 4R from me.


Carmax usually hold auctions for cars that they can't sell on the front lots, and obviously my 4R was one of them. Few weeks after I turned my title in, they eventually sold the 4R for $2500 to a NC dealer. I was a little bit disappointed because I had hoped someone who was really into 4R 'yotas would have bought the truck and fix it up themselves instead of a stealership, but it's all good. I miss it a lot still regardless.


Do you have a picture of that 1/8 strip? Maybe it's because they couldn't really fully tint the windshield due to limited space available for their hands to reach in? Sorry for the lengthy post

Like 5 years? That's how long I've been driving with no ticket for my windshield. I have been pulled multiple times for different things but never a word said about my windshield. Lucky? No. Responsible driver? Yes. And what's your definition of Big Ticket? It's a tint ticket. In North Carolina some people have said it is a federal offense to have your windshield tinted but never had any trouble from the FBI and when you're courteous to the police they are courteous to them.

I will give you that technically it is harder to see at 35% than 50% or 100%, that's science. But for me, at 35% on the front windshield and 5 over 5% on the sides has never been a major problem for me. It's always made me more cautious. Seeing out of the front however has NEVER been an issue. If you can't see out the front with 35%, you need glasses or shouldn't be driving.

I had my front tinted after getting so annoying with the glare from oncoming lights. They bothered the hell out of me. I also live at the beach so maybe the law is more understanding of dark tint down here. I can post some pictures tomorrow if you want.

It's all about respecting police if you get stopped. Roll down your windows, turn on your interior lights if it's at night. Show them what's there so they aren't as worried approaching a random person/car with dark windows.

I have a white 4r with limo tint on the top strip of the windshield. Also 20% front windows

Autbond (also white) had 20% on his entire windshield IIRC.

@Senor - I totally agree with you on everything you said. However as for the police...I've always respected them and whenever I got pulled over I'd roll all of my windows down so they could see me from their car. However, I also reminded them that I rolled down the windows for their safety as well as my safety and one officer told me thank you but he proceeded to ask me to roll the window up so he could test it. So it's not always the case where the police would let you off with no verbal warnings if you get pulled over for tint (if they pulled you over for tint, chances are they are going to follow through and give you a ticket despite the fact that you were being overly nice to them). It's unfortunate, but some officers will not let you off with a verbal warning or none at all.

The only likely case where the cops would not even see the tint is when they clock you speeding where you have the time to roll down all of your windows before coming to a complete stop when they walk up to your window. I've only been ticketed 3-4 times within a 5 year timeframe and the tickets were $96 each. Only because I was pulled over for tint alone (I assumed it was a secondary offense which does not allow police to pull you over but turns out it's actually a primary offense which gives the police all the rights in the world to pull you over for). Screw the tint laws!
 
I think you nailed it with the secondary and primary offense. Here in NC it is a secondary offense so most LEOs don't bother unless they already have you pulled and things aren't going well. I'm assuming the @Senor is me?
 
@BRONCOSI ******* - Haha yes! For some reason I typed 'Senor' (obviously I meant to type senior) instead of your alias! My bad - also I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your 4R with tint tomorrow ! It's funny though, maybe 4-5 years ago I was talking to my family lawyer (no longer retained by us now) and he mentioned the tint being a secondary offense. I will have to look into changes to tint laws in the past few years 'cause it's weird if a lawyer told us information that were incorrect in the first place to begin with.
 
WHat I meant was that in VA, a little after I got my 1st tint done ever, i talked to my lawyer at the time and he told me it was a secondary offense here. When I got my 1st ticket, I asked the officer for their reasoning to pull me over and they said "Potential tint violation, sir." and I was like, "whaaaaaat? Isn't it a secondary offense in VA?" The officier said, "Sir, tint is a primary offense which allows us to pull you over and inspect the potential tint violations on the vehicle. "


So yeah, I was surprised when this occurred, but I'll need to search for changes to tint laws in the past few years 'cause this is bull****.
 
Is it really worth the hassle with the law just to have tint? I know the cops should have better things to do than bother you about your tint, but how do you think I feel? I live in California. I'm not allowed anything here.

To answer your question, yes we all think it is worth it. Me personally, I have gotten one ticket from a very rude officer about 4 years ago. That's it. In NC we're aloud 35%. Have you seen 35%? It's basically nothing. You can look and not even tell there is tint on the window. No where I know has decent tint laws besides FL and TX. So essentially, we're not aloud much either but we chose to gamble and pay to have it done, as the OP said ILLEGALLY, because typically it pays off and at least for me, I'm not hassled enough to take it off.
