Windshield wipers will not shut off

1999 4 Runner Limited-jumped it once then would not start again so put charger on it for several hours (2amp). Still just clicked so bumped charger to the 200amp start. When I tried to start it, windshield wipers came on and would not shut off. Installed new battery (old one had a bad cell) but wipers still will not stop. They will go in the fast mode but otherwise, just regular speed. Intermittent control not working. Pulled the fuse for a few minutes but that did not help. Thoughts?

Bad winsdshield wiper relay. Find it, Tap it and see what happens.

It may also be a bad column switch. Never know till your start testing.

The wiper relay is part of the wiper/washer combo switch, and is for the intermittent mode only.
You may have fried the combo switch.

There might be a switch in the wiper motor that's blown; I had the same problem in a MR2 I used to have. It's a switch that indicates the parked position of the wiper arms, without it the wiper motor will continuously run as it doesn't know where to stop.

thread resurrection. Does anyone know where the wiper relay is located? Mine just started going nuts this morning, fluid wont spray, and besides it being insanely annoying my right wiper keeps popping off. Should I just replace the stalk? or should I start looking someplace else?

The relay is built into the switch (stalk) itself. I lost my intermittent feature and the wipers wouldn't rest back into place. I bought a brand new OEM switch and that fixed my issues. I tried contact cleaner on my original switch first to see if it was just gummed up. I found my brand new in box OEM switch on eBay for $115 shipped.

Possibly a short...based on random turning on wipers....cross the pump and see if it runs. If it works....then you know its in the power/wiring before it.

The fun part begins.. process of elimination. Do you hear the washer/squirter motor work? maybe test for voltage there first. Check the lines to make sure it's not clogged. Have they ever worked?

They worked flawlessly until the week before Xmas when they jumped off the deep end. I really don't think the lines are clogged- there is just no pump noise at all, and now that I know its not the switch....any bets on the pump just being bad?

I had a pump go out in my 92 pickup, so I wouldn't rule it out.

Surprisingly the lines are in great shape from what I've inspected so far. Need to check farther up the line but mag chloride and mud are coating EVERYTHING. the joys of mech work in the winter...

Hey sorry antexity I havent logged on in quite a while. Mine just started acting up again last week, but that was the first time since last spring so I kind forgot about it. Its definitely moisture causing a short somewhere...its moved up to my short list to figure out now that I have some other issues nailed down. Ill let ya know
