winshield poll

I have an '01 SR5 4wd. I don't run on the highway excessively, but I have found that I get more than my share of rocks and road debris that cause chips and cracks in my winshield. I'm on my 3rd winshield in 2 years and its a little more than annoying to keep replacing them.

(I tend to think that the windshield in the 3Gen 4runners sits with less of an aerodynamic slope, causing stones to have a less glancing blow to the glass.)

Does anybody else have this problem with any frequency?? Do you think a hood deflector wood help the rock situation??

i doubt the hood deflector will help at all.

mine is all pitted and messed up.. im gonna get it replaced soon. this will be my first time changing it out.

Buy a better windshield since they are all not created equal. PPG makes very good automotive glass. My '99 is only on it's 2nd windshield and while it's pitted and due for a replacement it has zero cracks and only one minor "star".
Cheap glass is exactly that and tends to crack very easily so that might be the problem.

Ok now this is wierd cause I was just thinking about this too. I have a small dot sized crack and now today I noticed a small line crack somewhere else. I am glad to know I am not the only one suffering here. It is almost vertical so I can see how rocks will have more impact. I will definatly pay extra for a good quality one. Not time to replace yet though. Just going to fix it as a temp solution.

A deflector is a help. While it won't keep fullsize rocks and debris from hitting the windscreen, it will keep the smaller particulate from directly contacting the glass' surface.

a hood deflector WILL help alot with smaller debris and pebble size rocks and even redirect some larger rocks. i have one on my fo runner and ive had it for a year now and never had a crack/scatch/any breakage whatsoever. Also TIP: dont ride peoples asses so hard, there really is no reason to get rocks in your windsheild unless your riding someones ass. my dad did one time get his window broken by a worker on the side of the highway who was mowing grass so there are acceptions to how your windsheild will break

Yeah my wife's is beat, along with the front edge of her hood and grille. Worse than on any other SUV we've owned. I'm going to get a bugflector and touch-up the paint at the 90k/mi tuneup and replace the windshield.

And no, she doesn't tail. Ever. My thought is that the aerodynamics (or lack thereof) do nothing to deflect debris coming at you on the 4R. I've heard buglectors help immensely, particularly with finer particulated that pit the windshield. Actual rocks will probably still hit (but my experience has been those are far fewer in frequency).

No worries. I drove from Tampa to Atlanta with my newly purchased 4runner with the "Bug deflector" but guess what. I had hundreds of dead bloody bugs on the windshield. If this thing does help then I can imagine I would have had thousands of bugs. It does not appear to help but I guess it does
