Winshield washer overspray?

So I seareched for the thread title and for simply "overspray" to see if this issue has been addressed and did not find anything. If it exists accept my apology as I'm not trying to clutter the 5th gen section.

Just took a trip from Chicago to West Virginia for my cousins wedding, and while our windshields are not as bad as the FJ, I think I killed every bug I came across. While trying to keep the windshield clean I became more aware of an issue that I have had since new.

When I spray the windshield washer fluid and need more than a quick spray the fluid goes over each side of the windshield and spray across the driver and passenger window. Not any sort of major issue but annoying as it then dries and requires cleaning along with the windshield. I have never had this occur on any of my previous vehicles including the Jeep.

Fixes, readjusting the sprayers, etc???

Readjust with a needle or safety pin. The tip should fit right into the sprayer hole and you can then angle it in the correct direction.
 
I have not looked at our sprayers yet, but I have a feeling they are not adjustable with a pin like those old school nozzles you find on 90s and older cars are. See below:

We have a fan pattern spray tip, so I would imagine it's pretty much fixed like this style:

For what it's worth I recall my side windows getting oversprayed as well, even when I am sitting still, so you're certainly not alone.
 
Pg. 206 and 208 of your owners manual... last line of the both boxes

"When a nozzle becomes blocked
Do not try to clear it with a pin or other object. The nozzle will be damaged."

There's your answer, kinda. You're either SOL or I'd try it anyways and see what happens.

The gutter system is different on the 4Runner. Does not allow for much flow before spillover.

Yeah I figured this is where I would end up… by no means a major issue just one more thing to wipe down when cleaning the windshield. I just hadn't taken a trip this long where it became so apparent.
 
As I prefer to keep my road tripping ride fresh and clean, I take some window wipes and a bottle of quick detailer strength Optimum No Rinse in a 1L spray bottle. Not only is the ONR great for cleaning the bugs off the windshield, I also use it to clean the bugs off of the front end/bumper at pretty well every gas stop and definitely by end of day. As a result... After 4,000km+ of my road trip this summer I have viritually NO bug acid/residue etched into my paint. Yes, the lower bumper picked up a few inevitable knicks from the highway, but that's expected. I never use the windshield washer fluid unless absolutely necessary.

I even ONR'd the 4Runner in the Hotel parking lot after it rained during the last leg of our previous day's drive. Yes, I took 2 buckets, a bottle of ONR, a bag of microfibres, a small foot step (for the roof) in additon to the above items on my road trip to DC. I am very glad I did too :).

All the other patrons at the hotel were probably thinking "damn canadians" when they saw you in the lot doing the 2 bucket method, lol. Who does that on a vacation :p

My biggest peeve is when I use the windshield washers stationary with the drivers window open, I still cannot understand how it comes INTO the car.....LOL
 
The 4th gens have the adjustable nozzles, the 5th gens do not have them if I recall. The 4th gen also does the same thing about the overspray.

Lol, pretty ridiculous! I even admit it. We were wide awake early so after breakfast, I was in the parking lot at 6:45am washing away.

ONR was definitely my best discovery of 2013. I really recommend the OP get either window wipes, or use the ONR quick detailer mix, to solve the spray problem. Save the washer fluid for the snow if it's winter or rainy/wet conditions in the summer.

If you drilled holes in your hood and ran the fluid lines up to them. They are on the outside on the hood ,were a biatch to wax around, the plastic faded and worked about the same as ours. I don't remember being able to aim them when I had a 4th gen but didn't have any complaints.Ones from a Lexus would probably be a better option.

Glad you posted this, I have not used the washer with the window down and now I know not to. But if my wife`s window is down, I may try it.
