Winter Advice

Suppose you don't have a garage and it's winter time, you don't drive your truck every single day.

How often do you start your truck and for how long do you keep it running?

I ask because since I have the 4runner I've been driving that instead of my other car, which is an older one.

So last winter I left it outside and never started it until the winter ended. When I did turn it on, it was bad. Basically the lesson here is don't leave your car sitting outside in the cold without turning it on. But the only question I have is how often should you turn it on?

I'm thinking maybe every other day for 10 minutes or so?

I'd vote for once every 7-14 days. The big difference is I'd let it run a full 45 minutes. It can idle for that time if it has fuel injection.

Any shorter and the exhaust never gets hot, the oil never gets hot, the battery doesn't get a chance to fully charge etc. Note: During 45 min run set the blower to a lower speed, not high and have the headlights lights off.

The other thing is to use a tank of gas every 90-120days so you need to drive it some. Fuel goes bad after time.

Hope that helps.
