I highly recommend Nokian tires, they are the best snow tire I have ever used.
^^ On 3rd season now on family SUV, winter tread compound will be done in 4 years.
- wife RAV4 gets the winters installed first of Dec. and off in April...equals 5 months/year
- winter tiress on 40% of year & she drives 34,000 Km or 21,000 miles each year
= 8,400 winter miles/year times 4 years = approx. 34K miles to wear out
Here in Ontario - Insurance gives us a 5% discount on our rates, with approved winter spec. tires.
Winter Tech Information - Bridgestone Blizzak FAQsHow Long Will Blizzak Winter / Snow Tires Last?
The Blizzak WS-tires' Multicell tread compound comprises the top 55 percent of the tires' tread depth with a standard winter tread compound comprising the remaining 45 percent. When Blizzaks are approximately 50 percent worn, their "snow platform" tread depth indicators "connect" selected shoulder tread blocks to indicate that the Multicell tread compound is almost worn out, and that the enhanced snow and ice performance is about to end.
We have personal experience on a wide range of vehicles from sports cars to SUVs. Our experience, and that of our customers, indicates that Blizzak winter / snow tires will typically provide 12,000 to 15,000 miles of winter service before wearing out their Multicell tread compound. Therefore, Blizzaks are providing an estimated three to four winter seasons of wear from their Multicell tread compound for the driver who drives an average total of 15,000 miles per year (with 3,000 to 4,000 winter miles per year).
Blizzak winter / snow tires are not recommended to be reinstalled when their tread depth has worn down to the "snow platform" tread depth indicators before the start of the winter season.

Was dinking around discounttiredirect while I was shopping for tires for my dad's truck.
Saw Pathfinder AT and Pathfinder Sport S A/T tires, both have the Snowflake stamp on them. Quick Googling says they are rebranded Kumho's made for Discount Tire with not too many user reviews.
While not a dedicated snow tire, I wonder how these hold up in the snow? Living in MN, I wouldn't mind running an All Season AT that's also rated for snow.
- Bridgestone Blizzaks = Awesome (WS80's on my van and WS50's on a VW Golf)
- General Altimax Arctic = Average (previously on van)
- Goodyear Duratracs = Surprisingly good (4Runner)
- Cooper Weather-Masters = Not recommended (VW GTI VR6)
3 or the 4 sets of tires are dedicated winter tires (Duratracs are not dedicated winters).
The General Altimax Arctic tires were worse than my Duratracs when they were 2 years (25k km) old and the Duratracs were new, in my opinion.
I've had the Duratracs for 5.5 winters now and haven't been disappointed. I told myself as soon as they under-performed I'd invest in either studded Duratracs or a dedicated winter tire but haven't felt the need to yet. As they wear down I intend to reevaluate.
Good luck.
