Winter tires

Hello all, I'm new to the app. I've recently made a move from Florida yo Maine so I'm in the market for some good winter tires without breaking the bank. I currently have 225 75 15. My question is what are my options without buying bigger wheels?

I'm one state south in Massachusetts, generally we run same tires year round. If you want to go cheap there are plenty of options on all season tires.........but more importantly, you just moved from Florida to salty Maine. Get working on a hard core rust preventative regiment or that nice solid 4runner will be crusty orange swiss cheese.

I recently bought a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3/W tires which are supposed to be awesome in snow. I have not had a chance yet to try them out in the snow but from what I hear, they are excellent. They have the 3 peak snow rating on them.

Plus as a bonus, they are pretty cheap. I found them for 108 bucks a tire shipped through simpletire.com

I'm running 265/75/16 which is basically a 32" tire which will fit without any modifications.

I second the Wildpeaks. Best bang for you buck and they're amazing in the snow.

Worth noting: I like them more than my duratracs. Made the switch because I wanted a bigger tire. Glad I did!

I'm surprised how quiet they are on the road too, they ride very nice.

I've taken them "off-road" on our hunting trails a couple times now and no complaints there either.

Blizzaks. Check TireRack reviews as well. I hope you spray Fluid Film on the chassis of your truck, because even one year of a Maine winter will take a toll on the underside.

I used to run duratracs year round but while they're good in the snow, they are crappy on ice and I had way to many close calls for my taste.

Last year I ran General arctic altimax and was pleased with them. Reasonably priced as well.

As far as wheel size goes, having one set of wheels with multiple sets of tires is a fool's game. Makes changing them a huge hassle and cost and it isn't good for the tires to be constantly mounted and re-mounted. A set of steels is cheap enough, and the price difference between 15's and 16's is probably negligible if you need to go 16" for a specific model of tire you may be considering.

I agree with buying another set of wheels. It doesn't make much sense to remount every season. I'll check out the altimax. Thanks for the tip. [emoji106]

You can literally watch a 4Runner rust out after a New England winter. It's even easier to watch that than it is to watch any rust converting paint you'll try to save it with dry. Don't allow New England to claim another 4Runner.

I use cooper discoverer ATW which are all season winter rated tires.. tires have been great for Canadian winters..

Blizzak's are the among the best, but pricey. I use Firestone Winterforce 2 (P245/75R-16) on my '99 Limited and like them a lot. I live in a part of Michigan that gets ~300 inches of snow a year and they have proven their worth.
