Wiper stalk. Intermittent setting?

I hope this hasn't been covered 200 times already. I did search.

On the wiper stalk in our '16 Trail Premium, the wiper's intermittent setting seems to be backwards. In every single vehicle I have ever owned, the setting on the intermittent dial ='s: Turn the dial up and the time between swipes is longer. Turn the dial down the time is shorter. The paint on my FJ's stalk also support this visually.

The stalk on the 4Runner has a similar marking however the dial on mine at least seems to behave in a reverse manner. The wider hash has the shortest interval and the thinnest the longer interval and the dial seems to act in reverse as well.

Is this something anybody has heard of or noticed? Anything we can do to rectify the issue?

Once I get this fixed, I need to find the damn dripping noise that comes from behind the B pillars when it's raining...

My best fix for this is to just get used to it. I drive a POS Ford Escape most days (because it's company supplied) and anytime I drive the T4R or my wife's Acrua everything is bass ackwards. I just learned to twist until I hit the interval I want.
 
What's odd, is while the information on the stalk are all identical to my '99 Camry, the intermittent results when you turn it are opposite.

There you go. It's opposite to my FJ too. The indication on the stalk are the same, but a long interval on the FJ is a short interval on the 4Runner. I wonder why.

It appears to be a common feature among the 5th gen then. Glad to know that it's a standard Toyota "Undocumented feature" rather than something wrong. Strange but not surprised that the painting on the stalk was never changed.

This is coincidentally how I work my iPhone. It seems to be impossible for me to remember where things are or what screen they are on so I just swipe all over until I find it.
 
Can we talk about how it needs a speed between the fastest intermittent and low speed, and how the fast speed needs to be faster
 
Its even more backwards for me. The 4Runner is the first vehicle Ive ever owned that the wiper control was not on the left side of the steering wheel. Im always reaching for the blinker stalk to turn the wipers on.

And yes.....the dial is backwards compared to every other vehicle.
 
Backwards from my 2005 Sienna that I traded for my 2016 4Runner but same as my wife's 2010 Camry. With Sienna I always thought thicker line = more delay. Now think thicker line = more rain :-)
 
Yup it's backwards from my 3rd Gen as well. At first I thought I was going nuts, but I checked it...more than once. I seriously doubt there is a 'fix'
 
This has to be because the original 4Runner engineer in charge of wiper stalk design was dyslexic. After Toyota tooled up and produced millions of wiper stalks the wrong way, it was deemed that it would be too expensive to retool the part by the accountants and they just ran with the backwards part. Toyota accountants are annoying!

Just a note on the engineer...he was fired and ended up committing harikari in an attempt to regain his families honor. True story.:wow:

There is a fix. Actually a couple of them.


The lower part of the V shaped indication means less wipes per minute as the upper part of the V is more wipes per minute, get that in your head and all is good.

or the other fix for you that are inclined to do so....
Put a piece of white tape over the V indication and write what ever you want there....

it's a fix either way.....
 
I sympathize, though. I drive a lot of different rental cars, and it's tough to train my brain to accommodate the few which insist on doing things backwards from every other car maker. There's one brand -- can't remember which -- where you flip the wiper stalk down for a single windshield swipe, and up to engage intermittent and constant wiper functions. It's annoying to keep doing it wrong for 500 miles, and then get back in your regular car and start doing it wrong because you finally got used to the rental.

Well... See, but if you were to revisit the original post, The stalk and the "V" are exactly backwards both visually and in function to my other Toyota that I drive every day being my FJ Cruiser. It's just weird. Manageable... though. We will rebuild.

Backwards from my two '82 SR5s, my '85 pickup, my two 87 4Runners, my '90 4Runner, my '02 4Runner and my '10 JFcruiser.

I think it may be a more subtle way those Japs are trying to kill off Americans since the floor mat/uncontrolled acceleration scheme was caught on to...
