wire splice taps

how well do these wire splice taps work, i.e. how good is the electrical connection?

and how well do they hold up over time?

I use them all the time.. Have never had a problem with them before other than sometimes they break if you apply too much pressure when clamping them down. What you need to use them for?

I want to splice into the existing wires for each of the turn signals to add side marker lights...

do you have any experience with the 3M Scotchlok electrical insulation displacement connectors?

I love the splice taps. They are handy in tight spots where soldering isn't an option.

Those are really good because they have dielectric gel in them. We use them a lot when I worked for a low voltage security/access control company. They're a bit more expensive though and probably not really needed in your case.

Might as well just use twist caps for home wiring. Their connection is just as good.

No offense but I would never use those other than to test a temporary connection... even then I don't know why. With the proper schematic there's no need.

All they do is strip a little insulation off a wire and make the connection with a few strands. Soldering creates a connection around every single strand of wire. Since electricity flows around the outside of each strand, you can see how this would be a problem in regards to current flow.

Soldering is ALWAYS an option.

And, frankly, the best.

It just depends if you have the depth of faith to do it or not.

Of course, shrink wrap is the best option for covering the solder, especially outside.

Inside, you can use either electrical tape, or the liquid electrical tape.

Or Shoe-Goo.
