Wireless Backup Camera

Before I plumb a backup camera extension harness for my rear bumper/carrier, has anyone installed a wireless backup camera that connects to the factory head unit? Just came across these and it makes a lot more sense to me than running 20+ feet of cable and having to worry about shorts developing over time with the tailgate and swing arm movements. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.. I'm not sure if anyone makes a device that would allow the head unit to pick up a wifi video signal?

I have a wireless back up camera, but it will not connect to the factory head unit. The unit I have is not the same unit you have listed but it is very similar.

How it connects/works is this:

You have a camera hooked up to a power source that is always on or turns on when you start your car.

Then you connect your phone/ipad/tablet/etc. to the wifi network that is being sent by the camera and you use a app specific to your camera to view the camera.

In order to keep your phone/tablet connected to cellular data , you will need to set up the static IP settings for your cell carrier or you will lose internet on the device.

So does it work, yes. Will it work how you want it to, no.

receiver plugs to head unit. transmitter to camera... wireless in between.

Otherwise, your head unit would need to have wifi reception so it could talk to that transmitter in your link.

Also be advised that on the transmitters and receivers.. They need power.. either a battery or from car. So there is that issue of changing batteries or running power. Not to mention the wireless could screw up for various reasons.

The wired setup is probably more long term secure if you simply protect the wires when you install them.

I harness that will allow you to connect any camera with an RCA feed to the head unit.

I was going to do a setup similar to basil lynch's FJ, just not sure where or how I am going to mount the monitor yet.

he used this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WR6ZR8U which has the ability to run 2 cameras for front and rear with a 7" monitor. or a single wired or wireless camera.

Awesome, thanks everyone. I'll see what I can come up with, it'd sure be nice to get a wireless camera out there but we'll see. If I figure anything novel out I'll report back.

Wireless backup camera

Just received the one from amazon ($39.00) and will be installing this weekend. I'll give you guys a review afterwards.

Lawndart made a good guide to running wires back to the rear swingarm. I believe that is the best route, it should not be THAT hard to do and will work as OEM. There are cheap 6v cameras out there, no need in getting the super fancy one he did, though that might have been the best option at the time. Good luck.

You could try this one but it is kind of steep. Wireless and connects to your phone or ipad app.

Wireless backup

Just installed the one from Amazon ($39.00). Easy install as I used the 7 pt hitch plug for camera/transmitter power (I use the 4 pin for my trailer). However, it works like a $39.00 unit. Picture has a fair amount of fuzz/flickering so not nearly as clear and stable as the OEM. It's better than nothing but I think I'll try to relocate the original with an OEM replacement at a later date.
