so i put a new long block in my 95 4runner 3vze 5spd..and everything is back together.. i started in in my garage and everything is ok...then i took it out on a test drive and it was good untill it shut off on me going down the st. so i open the hood and i had some smoke coming off the engine somewhere near the battery...so i let it cool off and start it back up and almost get it back to the garage and it does the same thing...this time it is compleatly dead and i have no lights or anything...so i put a different battery in and it made it back to my garage....so i have no idea wut is wrong some ppl tell me bad grounds but i hooked them all back up...so the only other thing i can think of is + touching ground so if anyone has any ideas plz HELP!

I would definitely look closely at the area where you saw smoke. Look for blackened areas on or near wiring. Check underneath the underhood fuse box. Also start it in the garage with plenty of lights on the area you saw smoke. Check for abraded wiring at the alternator maybe touching ground. If you have an amp guage does it show discharge?

Had another thought-Since you changed out long blocks the possibility is there for a pinched wire, maybe near the motor mounts or any other area where it's tight, say near the firewall. I realize that this doesn't neatly answer your question but there are a lot of variables. This is just a common sense approach. Good observation techniques will solve 90% of problems.
