SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS:
When it is a stranger there is not much you can do. When my neighbor talked to me about this, he would buy only American, I mentioned his Crown Victoria is considered a Import because Ford bought enough parts to make it a import, to help with the mileage numbers. He was a lot quieter after that.
A friend at work buys only Fords, of course he would buy used, since they depricated so much in the first 3 years. (That is not a great agrument for buying American.)
Which is more American: Buying a Honda made in Ohio or a Ford made in Mexico?

Making a car has become Global, sometimes it is hard to say what is American. Of course, buying a 4Runner, it is hard to say it is anything but Japanese.

I tell them if everybody bought American we would still be driving Pintos and Vegas.
I also tell them to check the resale of their vehicle, and where it was manufactured.
I'm not going to throw my money away (anymore) on some unreliable POS with bad depriciation.
My favorite is to ask them how many times their domestic has been in the shop. That usually shuts them up.
All I had to do is look at the repair history and depreciation of my wife's Civic compared to my Explorer, things became pretty clear to me.
It took 12 years for domestics to lose me, I finally got fed up and bought the vehicle that was the most reliable and had the least depreciation in it's class, and I am very happy with my 4Runner so far. It will take a long time again for the domestics to prove themselves capable of earning my business.
I'm not holding my breath, although they have improved.
On the other hand, the premium I paid for my used Toyota compared to a comparable Explorer would have paid for a lot of repairs and easily bought a very good extended warranty with plenty of money left over. I think buying new it's a no-brainer. Buying used it's not so clear-cut, and depends on how long you plan on keeping it and what you will be using it for. There are certainly good reasons to buy domestic, especially trucks. Just not the reasons I care about. For example, stock, my 4Runner is not a very good tow vehicle compared to my old Explorer, and neither is a Pathfinder.
I'm just rambling now so I'll stop.

I just say that I buy a quality vehicle that holds its value and lasts a long time. We have had a bunch of Toyotas in our family with many of them going into very high mileage. They keep going and going. Can the same be said of alot of the 'USA' cars.
Good point on the various 'American' cars being built in Mexico and Canada! My camry was built here in the US.

Im amazed that their are actual people out their that have to defend their purchase.
Living in a import area may help me in that aspect but their are still plenty of domestics roaming about but I would never be like "YO that Escalade is a POS why not buy a real luxury vehicle that does not loose 30k worth of value the 1st 6 months, dumbass "
Anyways the other day I was walking back to my truck after coming out of Donkin Donuts and 3 dump trucks passed and this guy hangs out the window yelling 4Runners rule, while the trucks air horns blasted
talk about loud.
What are the people driving that are asking, this guy asked me why I bought a V8, guess he was concerned with the excess gas I would be consuming but it just turned out he was looking at the same truck but ended up with a Honda Odyseey

With co-workers or anyone you know pretty well I would just say, I wanted a safe vehicle that the company built for the customers not something that was turned out as a result of cost cutting and maybe would be popular if it was offered with zero % interest and no money down.
Their are a million approaches to this but usually the less you say to the other guy the more you will feel less stupid in the long run, really why do you have to defend your purchase or explain yourself, I think it's funny that my friend knows all the techs at Jeep
