Wobbly Gear Shifter

So my new Runner's gear shifter has a lot of play from left to right, real sloppy. I looked underneath and it's pretty straight forward so I don't see where this play is coming from other than through the floor board. I know it couldn't have been this way from the factory so I'm wondering what's the deal? Obviously I'm missing something. Also there is some play too from front to rear on the lever but seems to be more a bit "normal" but MAYBE a little toward the sloppy side.

Any idea's?

Thx

I have a 95 model with the same problem. I read some where there are some bushings for the automatic shift lever that can be replaced that you can get from the dealer for cheap.

I did mine on an automatic. The bushings were really cheap, two little blue bushings. I want to say it was 10 bucks for the parts. The job itself is a pain in the ass. Takes a lot to remove the shifter.

I did this repair today and the shifter is like new, nice and tight. However I do seem to have a problem. When I put the gear selector handle back on it seems to hold the "secondary" shifter spring down a little to far which kicks in the safety switch not allowing the key to come out of the ignition or shift correctly. If I unscrew and pull the shifter handle up about 1/4" (off the "secondary" or the other spring on the main shifter) the main spring pops up and then I can turn key off. It's like the shift handle is holding down the white spring(see pic) I've had to walk away from it because I am totally frustrated at this point. What the heck am I missing here?

Try turning the white piece 180 degrees. You might not have the white piece exactly configured in its original position

Yeah, tried that and that's not it. Thanks though.

It worked before so obviously I did something wrong. Going to tear it apart again and see what I can see.
