Hello, I have a 97 toyota 4runner 3.4L limited with auto transmission. it came sudden one day that it wont go on reverse after a cold start, usually it would take to heat up to normal engine temp before reverse would engage. Earlier,it came up with a p0770 code or shift solenoid e code but already replaced those 3 transmission solenoid yet still got this issue. have any of you experienced this?

would appreciate any advice. ty

You have plenty of fluid in it/done a fluid change recently? I know auto's can act funny if they are run low or on old fluid. The gremlins and gnomes that move all the gears around like to have plenty of fresh fluid!

noticed your avatar, you came from vmi?also a grad of military school here in philippines.anyway, did an atf flush for about 3x in a month now, last one was today when tranny solenoids where replaced.its on the right level now, still same issue, wont go on reverse when engine is cold.no problem when shifted to D,its shifting good on D.just the reverse thing when cold

Was wondering if you ever found a solution to this OP? Experiencing the same problems but no codes coming up for me… this seems to all have started after installing a trans cooler in line with my rad. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but I also replaced my solenoids with aftermarket a few years back. Reverse issue is very random

Try replacing those aftermarket solenoids with OEM. If the problem is still there, it could be some o-rings inside the tranny have become cooked due to old age or overheating. when cooked, they no longer provide enough sealing so pressure won't build up. hence no reverse gear.
