wood grain trim question

Hey guys, My son just purchased a 2000 sr5 with 120,000 that's in pretty good shape for a 17 year old vehicle, it will need a total going over but seems to be a good starting point. I did the search thing and can't find the answer that I need. Interior trim is woodgrain and in bad shape (really worn), has anyone ever taken off the laminate to expose whats beneath? Can it be cleaned up and painted or just paint over the wood? Finding all the pieces in black could break the bank but that may be the only option. Thanks for any help, Mike

Yes, you can peel off the clear plastic. I've peeled off the easy ones that were already separating. The plan is to stain the wood & polyurethane for protection. I haven't decided on a stain color yet.

I have peeled most of the trim off of my 96. Some pieces were fine and you could not tell it had the wood trim applied. Others were left with a clear indicator that something was stuck it (discolored mostly) and needed to be repainted. I sanded them down and sprayed them with a matte black.

I did it. The wood laminate is extremely thin, so you have to be very careful separating the plastic or you will destroy the wood. I sanded, stained with MinWax stain, and finished with MinWax Polyurethane. Needs a touch up after three years, but has held up well.

i used a putty knife and removed all the wood. removed what was left of the adhesive then sanded it down with 400 grit. then painted with krylon fusion spray paint. a little dusty but i like they way it turned out.

I need to do this to mine. My woodgrain is losing all of the clear plastic coating and is starting to look terrible. My plan was to heat with a heat gun and peel it off.

That didn’t work for me. Tried that and even wall paper remover to melt resin, didn’t work
Had to pry off using knife
Used wood stain after lightly sanding with 300 grit. Then sprayed with clear coat

That looks good! I'm gonna go with a darker brown & an outdoor matte polyurethane.
