Worst Problem with 5th gen??

I've been a part of 4 different car forums for different makes(Subaru, Jeep) and all 2013 and newer vehicles seem to have the same problem with cheap thin paint. Is it illegal to make durable automotive paint or something?:redbrick::Cry:

I think you nailed it yes. The paint these days has to be eco friendly to use/apply at the factory and it does seem to be terribly thin and weak. Though my 04 taco's paint was the same way so it's not a NEW new problem. Been that way at least a decade...

Also the interior detail is also easy to damage. The silver coating on the console scratches if you look at it. And any scratches to the charcoal plastic interior results in a permanent and non-removable scrape that changes color to a lighter bluish color and stands out something terrible

I filled out a quality survey for Toyota about my 14 4R not too long ago and those were my main gripes, along with the slow update interval for the infotainment system and the occasional crashing it has.

Course... that's nothing like exploding transmissions or 25k engine rebuilds or weekly recalls that some other makes seem to have, so I'll take it!

Ditto on that one. It's absurdly thin. My 86 BMW 325I you could hit with a sledgehammer and the paint would stay in place.

My first new vehicle was a 1984 4Runner SR5. The paint chipped on it too. I have owned a LOT of vehicles since 1984 and every single one had stone chips on the front. I would love to find some of this mythical old paint everyone raves about that never chipped. I agree that if this is the worst problem we really have nothing to talk about!

I just came to terms that once the paint is pin striped and chipped enough I will end up wrapping it in dark blue I guess.

The paint on the window pillars on the front doors got scratched up during some work, thankfully the shop has an awesome PDR guy who can make them look good again. Paint on the outside getting scratched? yeah I can live with that if it's from offroad use. Inside? no! That bugs me to no end.

Honestly the biggest annoyance is the rear wiper being damn near useless and the hood bounces around a LOT under vibration. Seriously what is up with that?! /seinfeld

I never use the rear wiper, if the window is dirty, screw it. It don't matter what the behind me, just keep trucking forward lol.

This thread makes me smile, go google 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee problems, you'll have a full evening of comedy.

All complaints here are so minor in comparison to electric problems, tranny, etc but here are mine after 10 months of ownership.

1. Delayed shift into 5th on a long hill, was previously mentioned. I know it's programmed that way but passengers even notice it.

2. Low head room in rear seat w/sunroof - have to watch putting my kid into his carseat cuz I'll hit his head easily.

3. Paint scratches wayyyy too easily - nothing new as I owned 12' Tundra with same crap water based clear coat

4. After 8-9 months the entune starting freezing and restarting itself - need to get it to dealer.

5. Door passenger JBL speaker has been loose/rattled since day I bought it, only QA issue I've found

Really all minor stuff, none of which affects vehicle drastically, but those are my gripes.

Purchased a '15 TRD Pro and appears to be going down a similar path as another poster with their transmission. Have about 2,500 miles since February and has had a metal noise each time you shift ONLY into drive and reverse. The dealer initially said it was normal after we checked another Pro on the lot and two trails. All had a similar noise, thought what were the chances.

The noise has continued and is pretty loud. I Had a couple folks listen to my T4R. Based on symptoms(noise in D and R), the torque converter was identified as the potential culprit. Trying to wait until my first oil change, but I'm unsure if I should wait 3mth longer to go back to the dealer.

Thoughts?

My 2015 SR5 Premi 4x4 has a loud knock on cold starts. But eventually goes away when engine gets up to operating temp. Noticed it about a week after I bought it. I did check out another 2015 but knock is not as loud as mine. My runner only has 1700 miles and I'll get it checked out on my first service visit to the dealer. This is my 4th 4Runner to own.

High_Country & philsey...i'm not really looking for anything specific or looking for a problem to make me nervous. I had been in the market for a 4WD SUV for a yr or so, and with each one that i started to fall in love with, i would always find some mention somewhere that would say "google brand-X issue-X" and come up with some nice sized populace of ownership who have experienced some really crappy problem to cause them a full and complete surprise and disdain for their beloved vehicle. For example, I loved the Xtera, until i came across the Nissan Xterra/Pathfinder/Frontier transmission issue that renders these trucks useless once the issue is discovered-can you say full-tranny-replacement. Plus this is a 'will-happen-to-all' situation for those owners. Eventually I moved to toyo products, and loved the GX470 for a time, and then i started to get the foul wind of the dreaded failing air suspension issue. Again, a will happen issue that i wasnt willing to deal with for any new-to-me vehicle. I ended up on the 5th gen line once i learned that these vehicles were as dependable as an oak, made in a world class factory, and that my wife had a long lasting toyo when i met her. I find this forum, and for the life of me i couldnt find any nagging issue that any list of owners would complain about. a yr of building my credit from good to mr. wonderful, and ive got myself a 2014 which i love.

Mine keeps using up gasoline as I drive. I fill it up, but it uses it again. Very annoying. Every time it gets cold out I have to add air to the tires. Can't they figure out how to get around this? You have no idea how upsetting these issues are to me.


Oh yeah, and the damn oil keeps getting dirty every 10,000 miles. Ridiculous.

I would get it in soonest. There are places that will say that by not bringing it in sooner, you caused way more damage than there would have been if you had brought it in as soon as you noticed something wrong... and then they "might" deny completely correcting the issue at no expense to you.

there is a nice steep hill leading into an old landfill that i want to drive up and into...but im a bit chicken truthfully...

The Entune has never crashed in my 2013 Trail. Had BT issues with old phone, but new phone no problems. Have found that you really want to delete old text messages to speed up the display of new ones.

Lets see
- no lock on the gas cap.
- threw some CAN error code, but dealer fixed. Its fine now.
- the plastic of the trail seats are easy to wipe up, but they suck on a long trip, get sweaty really quick.
- the middle row of the second seat could still be more comfortable.
- saw a 4th gen with LED tail lights, Toyota could have had LED all the time for 5th gen. Its like they took it out so they could say later on, hey, look, now it has LED for 2014. WTF
- sh!t slides around on the top of the sliding tray. Could have had a more hooks or maybe a rubber top. I bought some rubber pads meant for stair treads and cut off the right angle. Maybe truck mud flaps would work too.
- no charging outlets in second row. Kids on smart phones or tablets == peace.
- NAV sucks eggs. Course it was probably designed in 2007 or 2008.

One of the only complaints that seems to be somewhat common, which I haven't seen too many lately, is the entune system shutting off and rebooting. I believe there is an update that addresses the issue though. My '14 just did this for the first time the other day but I haven't installed any updates or taken it to the dealer yet. Honestly, this is an issue that seems to plague most manufacturers these days. There are issues here and there but really these are pretty solid vehicles.

My Entune system has done this many times. Seems like it does it when the 'need service' messages start popping up.
