Worst Problem with 5th gen??

My search was light, so if it's already out there, then flame me...i understand the consequences.

OK, its a given that these things are tanks, are pretty much as reliable as the sun rising in the east. That the plant they are made in is one of the two best in the world, and you'll have to show me who would be #1.

however....

Has someone, anyone, bought or possessed a 5th gen where something really crappy, scary, and unforeseen gone wrong with it...where within days/weeks/months you were back at the dealership ready to curse/cry/spit about some issue that, though was not systemic to the species of vehicle, still was a major issue that needed some major repair work?

and no, my SR5 is simply wonderful. i have what my wife told me was a defrost-induced crack of my windshield that will be replaced in a few weeks, but other than that, no clunk, 4WD works as advertised, its way more smooth and comfy than any mag has reviewed it to be, and i am a fully satisfied customer to this point.

One of the only complaints that seems to be somewhat common, which I haven't seen too many lately, is the entune system shutting off and rebooting. I believe there is an update that addresses the issue though. My '14 just did this for the first time the other day but I haven't installed any updates or taken it to the dealer yet. Honestly, this is an issue that seems to plague most manufacturers these days. There are issues here and there but really these are pretty solid vehicles.

One member has already had to have his engine rebuilt (if I remember correctly it was around 25k).

My 2013 SR5 has a knock that has been there since day one, the dealer says its normal, but our other 2013 SR5 and our 2010 TE do not make the noise.

Lastly, our 2010 TE (with 90k miles) has an oil leak the front pass side.

All and all, the 5th gen is the second best Toyota I have owned (We have owned 52, not an exaggeration). I would only ever trade it in if I found a new Landcruiser for an amazing price.

so far my worst issue has been their location of the trailer light plug!!! grrrrrrr why dafug did they put it a mile away!!! ALL of my trailer light pigtails had to be redone!!!

No major complaints but my laundry list:

Headroom sucks, especially in the front passenger seat, if you have a sunroof. I rode in the passenger seat on the way home a few weeks ago after a few drinks and it actually made me angry/disappointed at how high the seat was set. I had to slouch and every time I sat erect my head easily crunched the roof liner. I literally had to lean my head into the sunroof opening. Driver side is obviously better but even at the lowest setting I can still graze the roof liner if I sit erect. I am nearly 6'4 but have long legs so I don't really sit taller than anyone a few inches shorter than me.
I have found a couple of paint pimples requiring repair. Passenger wiper is nearly impossible to keep de-iced in cold conditions resulting in ice/water smear over a 6" portion of the windshield.

I've seen the Tacoma commercials a thousand times (seriously, do they play them every 30 seconds where you guys live?) proclaiming its "bulletproof reputation for reliability." I think the same holds true for the T4R.

Coming from two Dodge/Jeeps (mine and my step-daughter's, both crapped the bed right around Christmas last year), I did a TON of research for my next vehicle and could not come up with a reason not to buy it. If you want to read some real horror stories, just google "Jeep 3.7 L"--or even "Toyota Avalon egg smell" (what I'm currently dealing with on my wife's car, which, by the way, is the first thing I've ever had to worry about on her car after 160,000 miles.

my worst issue, squeaky as hell body mounts.

winter and after a good rain, they don't squeak. but the rest of the time its annoying.

and that the only issue I can even remotely think of. otherwise the last 25-30 years I have had zero issues with all of my Toyota's. those issues I did have were covered under the factory/extended warranty so I don't count those since it was zero cost to me in the long run.

I would have to go back to my 84/87 Cressida to actually have any mechanical issues to b.itch about. temp gauge would randomly not report correct temp. I would have to tap the plastic covering directly over it to register and give a correct output.

I've had two failures on my 2011 that were not directly induced by an off-road incident and they seem to be very common problems. Overall, rock solid truck.

1. Speed sensor wire (may have been my fault, but there was a flaw from the factory)
2. Lift gate strut

@OP. Not really sure what you're looking for here ... confirmation of 1) the wife's diagnosis, or b) whether your 4R is going to implode soon, or 3) post count.

High_Country & philsey...i'm not really looking for anything specific or looking for a problem to make me nervous. I had been in the market for a 4WD SUV for a yr or so, and with each one that i started to fall in love with, i would always find some mention somewhere that would say "google brand-X issue-X" and come up with some nice sized populace of ownership who have experienced some really crappy problem to cause them a full and complete surprise and disdain for their beloved vehicle. For example, I loved the Xtera, until i came across the Nissan Xterra/Pathfinder/Frontier transmission issue that renders these trucks useless once the issue is discovered-can you say full-tranny-replacement. Plus this is a 'will-happen-to-all' situation for those owners. Eventually I moved to toyo products, and loved the GX470 for a time, and then i started to get the foul wind of the dreaded failing air suspension issue. Again, a will happen issue that i wasnt willing to deal with for any new-to-me vehicle. I ended up on the 5th gen line once i learned that these vehicles were as dependable as an oak, made in a world class factory, and that my wife had a long lasting toyo when i met her. I find this forum, and for the life of me i couldnt find any nagging issue that any list of owners would complain about. a yr of building my credit from good to mr. wonderful, and ive got myself a 2014 which i love.

as far as the defrost induced crack in my windscreen. well, my wife says thats what happened. ive NEVER heard of that before, but hey, thats not an argument i want to start. especially since i had driven the truck for weeks before, using the same defrost, and it didnt happen to me, even during the record cold in the east this yr. so what can i do...but ill also add, one morning a few summers ago i wake up and see my motorcycle on its side. just so happened to be parked behind her car the night before. i call her, voicemail...she txts back "sorry, i think i tapped your bike"...tapped...yeah, its a 700lb sport touring motorcycle. if you tap it with a compact car, i think you'd know it.

My only complaint is the intermittently clicking brake pedal. Been talked about on here a time or 2 but no solution found and some claim its normal. Might be, and no problems related to it, just annoys me. I haven't taken it to dealer either since as I mentioned since it's not causing a problem or always occurring, so I feel like that'd be a waste of time for now.

Honestly this is best vehicle I've owned and couldn't be happier. Admittedly I truly miss my Superduty with all its bells and whistles and mods done to it, although not its ridiculous emissions system and seriously expensive shop time to repair it. Life changed though, truck needed to go, and I've always liked the 4Runner and feel it was the best decisions I've made regarding a vehicle.
