One member has already had to have his engine rebuilt (if I remember correctly it was around 25k).
My 2013 SR5 has a knock that has been there since day one, the dealer says its normal, but our other 2013 SR5 and our 2010 TE do not make the noise.
Lastly, our 2010 TE (with 90k miles) has an oil leak the front pass side.
All and all, the 5th gen is the second best Toyota I have owned (We have owned 52, not an exaggeration). I would only ever trade it in if I found a new Landcruiser for an amazing price.
My 2012 makes this same noise but only at idle. I've listened to it 4 other 5th gens and they all made the same noise. I am gonna try a thicker oil next go around to see if it quites down a little. This is my only complaint with the vehicle at 53k miles.
side windows do have defrosters
Notice that most complaints come from pre '14 owners.

That squishing noise is your brake assist. All is normal.
You'll learn to love it the first time you panick brake!
What's wrong with not wanting my 53k engine to sound like it's got a rod knock? Manufacturers only use the 0w20 oil now days for fuel efficiency and not for any other reason. The 0w20 oil is like fn water. I'm only planning on running a 5w20 synthetic next time so it's not like I'm going to run straight 50w. Btw automotive engineers aren't always the smartest people. It's usually the technicians/mechanics like myself that see the every day problems vehicles have and can probably come up with something better then what the so called engineers designed. Obviously there's something not right with the 4.0 engines in the 4runners for them to make such a noise at idle. I am not the only person who has noticed this knocking sound. Toyota engines are usually quiet and you really only hear the injectors clicking at idle. Hell my dad's 99 Avalon with 250k is quieter then my 2012 4runner at idle. I used my stethoscope to pin point where this noise is coming from and it's mainly around the cylinder head area. More noticable near the front of the engine so I suspect it's coming from the timing chain or its components.
I agree with you on the paint, the quality sucks. Having a white vehicle really shows a lot of those pinhole size rust spots too.

Correct engineers have an agenda. To keep their jobs by changing things. I saw this happen every year as the new Volvos came out at work. One year nothing at all changed in the engine and all of a sudden the oil change interval was bumped up to 7500 miles from 5000. Purely a marketing ploy since 5000 miles at the time barely kept them from sludging. They changed so many things that worked fine and then turned into a complete nightmare. When I used 5-20 oil in my ls400 years ago when the motor was reasonably young you could smell the oil burning at the tailpipe. Seriously I couldn't believe it. With 10-30 no smell. Im guessing that 5-20, 5-30 or even 10-30 would work fine in a gen5. Not in Alaska though. If the knocking noise bothered me I for sure would bump up the viscosity.
