Would $1600 Clear XPEL be worth it on a black 2018 4runner?

Not sure what other people think, but I was deciding on this when I purchased mine at the beginning of the month as well.
I opted not to do it.
IMO if it was the ENTIRE car, it would be worth doing because you have all around protection. But if youre not protecting the whole thing you will still get door dings and rock chips on upper parts of the car, so really you will have half a nice car and half a car that is chipped.
I figure keeping extra following distance, parking further, and being careful of surrounding goes a longer way and that money can be put to better use elsewhere.
I also plan to keep my car for 10+ years, as I only would put 5k/yr on it if that.

Would absolutely get it on at least the front bumper and part of hood. I have had my silver SR5 for just one year and already have a few rock chips on the front bumper. And I know there are a variety of reasons for softer paint but Toyota paint in general is soft.
It is worth it if you never plan on selling it and don’t want to have to do touch up paint. But I would only get it done in a way that doesn’t leave exposed edges. I don’t have much film, just a door edges and cups pkg. Those edges get so dirty, especially the piece near the rear fender flare. The door cup pieces have been really effective. And some people are getting Xpel then ceramic coat on top of the Xpel. By far and away though the only place that really needs it is the front valence. And that can be replaced every so often if you really wanted to. So far I have gotten a rock chip on the roof, front of the hood, rear fender flare, front bumper (non-valence). But all of these have been 1 spot, so no big deal to touch up. The front valence however has got at least 5 spots. This is in 31k miles of average driving. Nothing on mirrors, front fender flares or anywhere else. I do have mud flaps and running boards and the help a ton. I would get boards or sliders before any protection film. I just ran through some line paint and if was all over my fender wells but nothing slung on the paint.

Welcome, don't be afraid to ask questions, in all honesty the search functions on these forums suck. I usually search the forum using google rather than search within t4r.org.
I would not get 1600$ in paint protection film on my 4runner.
I bought my 4runner knowing I would hunt, take it off-road, and play with it. It also sits pretty high off the ground.
Now a porsche on the other hand sits low to the ground, spends its days on the highway and is made to look pretty so for something like that I'd drop the 1600 in a heart beat.
but personal preference, Xpel is some of the best in the industry so it would be great at protecting it.
OP, I thought about it also on my 1 month old Pro. I got a quote for $995 for same corverage you mentioned from a reputable place. That includes all the prep and claybar etc. I’ve never had it done before.
And of course a 370z will be cheaper, it’s way less coverage than a 4runner and the coverage areas OP mentioned.
I was curious about washing, is it visible, and any staining if removed.

I have ziebart film product on my Honda. Thick edges get dirt and wax buildup. I had ziebart replace for free after 10 years, lifetime warranty, because it was coming off in places. 11 years and 245k miles later it did what I wanted it to do.
I have xpel on 4R and it is almost impossible to see compared to ziebart product. Edges aren't thick and I don't have to deal with wax buildup. I had a large rock hit the hood protected by expel. Paint was fine but the expel had very noticeable markings. Xpel dealer had told me you could repair xpel by heating, with blow dryer or warm water, and it would return to original shape. I used a blow dryer and it worked. Very happy with 71k and no chips. I have repaired windshield twice and replaced once in this time. I would recommend xpel.

In 2000 I bought a new Tundra, the most expensive vehicle I’d purchased to date. Two or three months after I installed X-Pel on the hood, front area of fenders and lower grill. I actually helped them put together a precut package for the SR-5 since this was the first year for the Tundra. Finally sold that truck in 2015 and got the 4Runner. After fifteen years the X-Pel looked pretty much like it did when I put it on. There was one little slit on the front fender where a rock about the size of a golf ball bounced off a year or two after I put it on. Could hardly see the cut. No ding or paint damage, the slit kind of self healed..., pretty neat. Bought a new bike last year that has matte paint so in in the process of installing Stealth X-Pel to some fender and upper valance areas.
This stuff is kind of expensive but I believe is the best on the market.
