Would you give up your pick-up truck for another 4Runner?

A long winded post, sorry. A little history here:

So, in April 2012 I sold my paid-off '04 Silverado Z71 extended cab to a co-worker. Kind of stupid I know but I just wasn't into this truck. However, it was extremely reliable for all 140k miles I owned it. I kept it maintained and so clean you would never guess it had that kind of mileage.

To replace it I bought a 2012 F150 ecoboost crew cab (don't laugh). It's had a few issues already but between the dealer and myself, those issues have been resolved. I do really like the fact that this truck feels like it has a diesel under the hood. Gobs of low end torque which I like when I tow something. While I do like the truck, I'm not sure I like it for as much as I'm paying on it.

Now I really like my '08 4Runner. It's my wife's primary vehicle and has been really good to us. I drive it as much as I can (when she lets me). I've always liked the 4Runner line. I've been following the 2014 4Runner thread in the 5th gen section for a while now. The wife and I really like the new look.

My question is, who on here has replaced their truck with a 4Runner? Do you regret not having a pick-up truck? I probably would have to buy a small trailer or a beater pick-up truck because I do haul stuff occasionally that would not fit or that I just don't want inside a 4Runner like sheets of plywood, rocks, dirt bikes, trash, etc. We built a new house last year so I'm still landscaping our lot as well. Later this month I have some heavy stuff to haul to Scottsdale but after that I may not be hauling anymore heavy stuff. Financially it may be a dumb idea. The other thought is go with a Tacoma but the bed is a little small so I'd still need a small trailer.

So, please, give me your thoughts and opinions on trading my F150 for a 2014 4Runner.

I would trade it probably. Though I'm not a fan of Fords to begin with

However, I find the 4Runner to be one of the best all around vehicles there are. It tows, it's roomy for it's size, it can offroad fine stock, is very reliable, it's comfortable, etc. It's a vehicle that kinda excels at everything out of the box. I have my 3rd gen 4Runner, my mom has a 4th gen, and my dad has a Tundra. Originally the only reason we had the Tundra was for hauling our horse trailer. Since I inherited the 3rd gen, the Tundra is driven all the time now, but for the first 5 years of it's life it had hardly any miles on it since it served the same purpose you're kinda saying you (potentially) would keep a truck for.

I would take my 4Runner over a truck, mainly because I can store stuff in the back and sleep in the back without any hassle or risk of getting wet. Then I can tow most of the stuff I need to tow, and if I need to carry something long like lumber, I can usually just prop it out the rear window or on the roof rack maybe. I also like that it retains truck roots but is smaller and more nimble. And then a big plus for me is that I have full time 4WD for the winter, which granted full size trucks weigh more and can handle being in 4WD even if they aren't slipping for some time, the fact I never have to worry about sliding or not having enough traction on dirt or snow is nice. The 4Runner is a lot more versatile in my opinion, though there are always times you need a full truck if that's how your lifestyle is.

it is super nice having a pick up. you make more friends once you buy one (constantly want you help moving)

although a second option to having a truck is to buy a trailer.

but still having a pick up is nice, but it all depends on what you need it for.

how often do you drive it? dont use it for 3 months and see if you still need it or you could sell it.

my family has a camper shell on the back of the 95 ford F150 so it kinda negates the purpose of having a truck. but its super nice having a light back there and carpet in the bed and all that storage space.

we personally dont drive the truck all that much because its just harder to drive and park but it is prob the cleanest 95 F150 you will ever see.

Honestly I'm still conflicted personally.

I miss having a bed and the extra towing/hauling ability of my '00 Z71 all the time but I bought a roof rack to haul larger things than I can't fit in the cargo area (but then weight is a big issue). I really miss being able to throw things into the bed and the bed mounted tool box most probably though. But I also like the enclosed cargo area for most things....

I need to invest in a small trailer and, for what your plans are, it sounds like you do too if you go the 4runner route.

It's really a tough and personal call though. You really have to think about your priorities before you make the decision for yourself.

Sold my 3rd gen for a Titan only to keep for almost three months. The bed and extra hp is missed but I am not as comfortable as I am in these trucks

Trade truck for a 4runner?

I did, and it was a 4WD extended cab Tacoma which I bought new back in '98.
Found a '98 4runner that I couldn't say no to, and I have not driven my truck in 10 months now. Guess it's time to sell it! Dry storage space, extra seating, and my trailer is 6-1/2' X 12'---try hauling anything that size in your full size truck! To me it's a no-brainer...4runner plus a trailer will do anything your truck can do, but your truck and a trailer will never do family trips, luggage, groceries, etc as well as a 4runner.
