You should be different then all the other 4runners on this forum.

1st - I would paint it a Flat Dark Earth. Everything - body, grill and wheels. Be creative with stencils and stencil in some model numbers and fuel location, jack points, tow points, tire pressures and what not. Stencil in Wounded Warrior on the roof.

2nd - Get your lift. Get you some land cruiser springs from a junckyard and some spacers for the front. Depending on how much lift you want, you can spend another $150 and get a 2" body lift.

3rd- Tires. This is pretty costly but 33" MTR or mud terrains tires - Treadwright has re-tread which are more then half price.

After tires, the skies the limit and what to do next - Plate bumpers, snorkel, lights, Big ole CB and Antenna, Bumper mounted spare tire holder, jerry can holder, Winch, Armour, locking differentials and ect.
 
Well as far as a lift goes either ome or coilovers up front and lc coils with oem lc shocks out back. I ran a set of swayaway coilovers on my last 3rd gen with 8 wraps out back and i liked the ride but i just ordered ome 883 coils for the front and im doing 8 wraps again for the back on my current 3rd gen so it will be interesting to see how it drives compared to my last 3rd gen. I like the 5 star wheels the best and found another set for my 96 im building right now, probably gonna do some 1.25 hubcentric spidertrax spacers up front to clear the uca's. Last truck i clearanced the uca's by cutting them back then welding in a filler piece to gain what i needed to clear the 285's but i dont feel like going through that much work this time.

I also just ordered some 231mm tundra brake calipers off ebay and im just gonna go with some autozone rotors and pads since they have a warranty and the added size will stop my frunner plenty good enough without dropping extra coin on slotted rotors and expensive pads.

A sport hood is always cool, im looking for an arb for this truck then im gonna do some 4xinnovations sliders. I just helped a buddy install a set on his truck and i really like the way they turned out and fit the 4runner.
 
Heres my first 3rd gen i had-green and the second one i just sold to my buddy who wanted it bad. I tried to get away for a few months then found my 96 and decided to build another but heres some different ideas of what you could do to one.

Singtoe's got some good advice there....the only thing I'd change is rather than a spacer kit in the front....get some used TRD Tundra Strut Assemblies. I got mine from a 2001 or 2002 4X4 Access Cab...also used a small top plate spacer from Toytec to give me another .5 " of lift. Rides great, and super cheap to buy! Got my set off E-bay.....even with re****ed Shipping costs from US to Canada...cost about $325.00 .....you could probably do it for under $200.00 for the front. Then like Singtoe said, get some LC coils for about $80.00 for the pair, add some rear LC shocks for the rear of your truck, and a front differential drop kid from Toytec....and you have a complete lift for approx. $400 - $500!

I'm not American, but also thank you for your service. I have a cousin in the Canadian Army, and my Grandfather was also. I tried to join the Army 8 years ago, but they denied me because of a stupid childhood Asthma problem...which was no longer even an issue! Anyway, I'm really glad you made it back home, and good luck on your build man!

Glad to hear you helped by the Wounded Warrior Program. I am a veteran myself and in 2010 I visited the offices of the Wounded Warrior Program in Washington DC. I went to DC with a group of fellow Veterans from U.C. Santa Cruz and we were representing Student Veterans America UCSC Chapter.

I was really impressed by the idea behind the WW project and its leadership.

I am also a member of IAVA and appreciate the work Paul and his team is doing as well.

Hey guys ran into a snag yesterday my gauge cluster lights just stopped working. Checked all the fuses and no such luck.
 
dont mean to state the obvious but down below the cluster is a round knob... it turns back ad forth, it brightens and dims the dash lights, if its turned all the way one way it will shut them off, ive bumped it before and thought i lost my dash lights too... -not sure if thats the prob or not just tossin it out there.

welcome home and i also like the idea of flat coyote with the stenciling ect... i would say multi-cam, that would be sick! but that would also be hard to do and a PITA, or foliage green is always another option... but i also could see how being in the army and having your personal vehicle look like your truck from the motor pool could get old fast and or not even wanting that...
 
Yeah ive turned the knob every which direction and no luck but thanks. The paint ideas are sweet still contemplating
 
the beauty of that is, if you ever scratch it you can rattle can it and no one will ever know and it would look sweet, i have thought of doing this to one of my older 85 pickups but im on the fence still
 
I have been contemplating the foliage green with black bumpers, wheels and sliders. I think that would make an awesome looking runner.
depending on what you intend to do with the rig would drive what kind of lift and all that you would want to get. I couldn't be happier with my Sonoran Steel lift. it was all inclusive and bolted directly on. In my opinion it is worth the extra money to have a well put together easy to install lift. but if you are going to be on the street for most of the time then spacers work just fine. I will say what ever wheels you decide on make sure they are lug centric. i put some hub centric wheels on mine and chased a vibration for about 2 years until i read about the differences and how they affect our front end.
you could always keep the stock wheels and paint them black, or have them line-xed.
Just some ideas, biggest thing to to make it how you want it.

I have some OME 882 coils mounted and a pair of OME 890 coils...they are yours if you want them. Both have 50,000+ miles on them.
 
heres a cool mod i did using my surefire helmet light and the molle clip. i wanted a better map light and or adjustable light and then it hit me... 10.jpg

i just used two automotive trim screws and screwed them into the head liner, the molle clip will slid right out if you pull it, but its secure enough it wont fall out. i love the light cause i can have red or white light in varried brightness and can adjust where it shines..., i also did the molle seat covers- http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/81627-molle-seat-covers-j-p.html

i got me another red and white one... but no fancy clip like the one i used... but you can get those off of ebay for like $15... if you want it the light let me know...
 
Good looking Runner. The progression is gonna be sweeeeet! Well, sweet for everyone except your wallet.
