Being a General Contractor I deal with the mentality all the time. There are a lot of people that are very 'Merican, and assume that if it doesn't have a bow tie, blue oval or a hemi that it is a child's toy or a piece of junk.

I am sure that the semi-re****ed woman taping that event thinks that her Ford Expedition is a "real" 4X4.

I am not so sure of the stats anymore, but when I bought my Runner in 04', Toyota was the largest automotive employer in the US. That was a good fact to shut up the ignorants.
