WOW!! Clay Bar is Amazing

I have a white 99 and I assume it has never been clayed because I did it for the first time yesterday and the results were amazing. My white paint had looked dirty and dull even after a wash, polish and wax.

It took some time to get all the grim out of my paint but the results were worth all the effort. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a great finish.

Agreed -- it makes a huge difference and isn't that difficult to do.

It's funny that a week or two ago, the Click & Clack column in the local paper had a question about claying and they said they had never heard of it! They did their research and concluded that it wasn't necessary. http://www.cartalk.com/content/columns/Archive/2009/October/10.html

I clayed my 4Runner for the first time this Spring and holy shyte Batman!

I used the Zaino clay bar with their instructions and soap and the finish was so incredibly smooth. Originally I was going to just do the front but figured I'd do the whole thing and after an extra hour or so the truck was done and looked better than it normally did.

Surprised to hear that the white color had such a dramatic difference too.......and I am disappointed in Car Talk, they seem to be up on so many things in the automotive world.....but while I agree that it is not "necessary," it is important for those of us who love our cars and don't just view them as a means of transport.

My white always looked dirty and I could even see what looked like water streek marks on my doors. Polishing, waxing, could never make this dirty look go away. Not any more. My white is as clean as new.

Have you guys tried either the Turtle Wax Ice liquid clay or clay bar? In general their Ice line is well reivewed. I use the Ice liquid wax/polish and like it.

yes, useing a Clay Bar and a good wax will make your vehicle look better than new, heres a pic of my 99 after Ive been wheeling this thing for a few years, lol:

claybar does make the difference. works great on glass too.
for prober lube for the bar you can(after your 1st wash) get a fresh bucket of car wash and baiscally wash the car a 2nd time and bar as you go. very efficient use of time. picked that one up from autotopia

Usually the box has a recommendation, mine say about three cars or so. I've used a bar about 4-5x's on my car before. The problem with not replacing the clay bar frequently is the risk of the contaminants in the clay becoming abrasives and putting fine scratches into the finish.

It takes me about 2hrs to do all the sheet metal, bumper, cladding and flares. I run the bar over until the surface is smooth and there's no visible contaminants (rail dust, black marks, etc). I'm slow when it comes to cleaning my car, takes me the better part of the day to wash and wax.

My steps are clean rims and tires, hose down or pressure wash the body, hand wash, clay, hand wash again, polish, and finally wax/sealant. Then apply 303 on black and rubber trim, and plastic sealant on the lights.

I used Zaino clay on my white '06 and the looked like it just rolled off the assembly line....then my wife totalled it. The white really popped and looked great after a good cleaning.

Now we have a gray one, and I haven't had a chance to give it the full treatment yet.

One of my worst nightmares is this. Spending 4 or 5 hours washing, waxing, polishing, claying, vacuuming, and detailing the hell out of my truck.......and crashing it on teh way to work the next day.

My wife is paranoid of driving the truck because she knows that I love it. Plus she does not want to shell out the money for a new vehicle.

I agree. Photos do not do claying justice, regardless of color. What IS amazing about claying is the way the sheetmetal FEELS afterwards.....smoother than a baby's butt!

Personally I'm always amazed how nasty the clay looks after using it on a freshly washed vehicle. That would make for good photo comparison.
