I've had 7 Jeeps so far... 91 Grand Wagoneer, 2 TJs, 3 XJs, and my last one was a 12 JKUR. All of them got plenty of miles and all except the Grand Wagoneer were extremely reliable. I love my 4R but I REALLY miss the Waggy and the JK... and just having a Jeep in general.

A good friend of mine had a heavily modded 2015 JKU sold it and now has a modded 2018 JKU. They definitely upgraded the interior in 2018, its finally up to date with the times. My gripe with wranglers is that I cant stand the terrible ride that they have, the rear seats are a disaster for any long trips, the road noise (which you've stated), hood slap rattle, the ergonomics of getting in and out of that vehicle. However people who own wranglers dont buy it for all that nonsense now do they. Welcome to the 4runner family =)

I have bought a new 2018 TRD Off-Road w/KDSS -- the deal was too good to pass up. Now I'm getting my modded 2012 Jeep Wrangler ready to sell. It's important that I make this sale in fairly short order, because therin lies my budget for mods. I'm sure you know what I mean.
It's been a great ride, but I'm moving on. Jeeps will always be there if I change my mind. Maybe I'll get a used JL in a few years, maybe not.

This thread struck a chord with me. I've always loved jeeps (still do) and growing up as a kid lusted for one knowing I'd have one some day. Several years ago I went rock crawling in Vegas with my girlfriend and was amazed with the capabilities of the jeep. I remember thinking, surely we're not going over that, this guy must be crazy only to find myself doing it with ease. This rekindled my desire to get a jeep. So I started researching and talking to friends who owned jeeps; you know, the usual stuff. Well, I learned a lot and ended up buying a 4runner. I'm still very happy with that decision.
I've had just as many Jeeps as I have had Toyotas. The major difference has always been reliability and resale.

* 1998 TJ Wrangler Sahara-Exhaust manifold (x3) freeze plugs (x2)
* 1999 WJ Grand Cherokee-T-case
* 2003 TJ Rubicon-T-case
* 2005 LJ Rubicon-transmission
* 2007 JKU Rubicon-T-case (x2)
* 2012 JKU Rubicon-Heads (x3) Lemon Law Buy-Back
As you can see, I have never owned a Jeep that didn't give me issues. Out of all of those vehicles only the t-case in the 2007 was covered under warranty and only the first replacement, they denied the second claim on the one they replaced lol. The 2012 spent more time in the shop than it did in my garage and the only reason it was handled was because they legally had to buy it back, but trust me when I tell you that they fought that tooth and nail.
Jeeps are iconic and there's definitely something different, spiritual, and fun about them that a Toyota will never capture, but at this point in my life I let other hobbies and passions capture those feelings for me. I'd rather the reliability remain a constant and not a crap shoot like it was when I owned Jeeps.

My friend has an UNLIMITED LIFETIME warranty on his Wrangler. Good thing, too. He is on his third engine and it's under 100k. I wanted a wrangler so bad but decided I did not want to deal with their reliability issues. Maybe Toyota will come out with a topless offroader again. Probably not, but one can dream.
