Wrong break pads or...

So I went to Oreilleys to get new break pads several days ago and they sold me the BrakeBest SC799 which are for Tacoma instead of the SC436A which are for 4Runner. Is there a difference? Should I go raise hole hell? After replacement, bleeding and seating pads the pedal feels soft. Not sure if its me being paranoid or if there is a real issue.

Sorry, random late night revelation inspired by whiskey.

Go break the brake pads in. If that doesn't make the pads feel better, then go raise whole hell.

Only difference I can see is the molding for the wear sensor.

soft brake pedal would be you got some air in the line.

use a vinyl clear hose on the fitting keep the open end of hose in brake fluid. with the pedal down ,open bleed screw and see if bubbles .. when its solid then it should improve.

when I change the brake pads I open the bleed screw ,bleeder hose on the fitting and then using C clamp push back on the brake caliper to push out all the old brake fluid, then close bleeder..

i have a vacuum bleeder. i have pulled fresh fluid through all the lines per FSM.

What i'm experiencing leads me to believe i have an issue with the MC. Anyone get the toyota MC rebuild kit?

all you did was pad replacement ? Hard to believe that would change brake pedal feel or make the master cylinder go bad. Unless they are crap pads that dont bite

The only difference between the 799 and the 436 brake pads is that the 436 pads have 2 specific inner pads. The 799 has effectively 2 lefts and 2 right...all 4 are the same except for the wear sensor position. The 436 pad set has 2 pads with the wear sensors right smack in the middle that go in the inboard position.

It makes no difference, all other dimensions and the friction pucks are the same size. If you have a spongy pedal, it's because you have air in the system, rotors are not flat, or the pads are crap and compressing. Did you change the rotors? If not, is there any rotor wear? If so, the pads are only contacting on the high spots and that's whats causing your lousy pedal.

Soft after a pad change/ bleed is usually air in the line. I'd also agree that they need to break in so to speak.

Would be unusual for the MC to fail after that service.

So it's been a long fought battle, still can push pedal to floor. I've bled the brakes furthest from driver yadda yadda. Still same issue. No leaks anywhere.

I have a 2000 that doesn't have the fancy master cylinder but ABS of course. Could air in the lines be trapped in that system on the passenger side of engine compartment? Any tips would be appreciated.

Turn the key the on position
Hook up your bleeder to the RR and let it suck for a while
Watch your master and DO NOT let it go dry just keep topping it off as your bleeder is sucking
After about 3-4 min
Close the line off and check your pedal
If the problem persists than move to the LR and then RF you know the drill
If you still have the problem make sure your wheel cylinders are leaking for any reason
If they are not than I'd say it's safe to say you have a bad master.

Update: after pulling 64oz of fluid through each line i still had soft pedal. Low and behold. air trapped in ABS unit. Had a mechanic buddy cycle the solenoids with a scan tool and pressure bleed. 100% now

how exactly does that work, you cycle the abs with the scan tool, out comes air, then you rebleed and air comes out?

edit reread it, you cycle the abs, with pressure on the system, until bubbles are cleared?

64 OZ of brake fluid thru each line ? I replaced all my brake lines on my truck and used 32 OZ total. still had some left in bottle.

I think he was trying to say he cycled 64 OZ's but still didnt get the air out of the system BC the abs units had air in them.

what some have done/reported was drive on a dirt / gravel surface and get the ABS act up then bleed the brakes.

could also be the ABS valves were stuck slightly open creating that soft pedal effect.

the ABS if it did have air trapped in the valves should not have caused the soft pedal . but a valve leaking would.

64OZ that is a half gallon of brake fluid .

Next time leave the bleeders closed and push the caliper pistons back with a c-clamp to make room for the new pads. The fluid will just be pushed back into the master.

So, resolution to my headache. It was indeed the brake booster. I thought it was air in ABS. it felt slightly better after a cycle but days later was the same. weird.

Today I picked up a salvage booster for $75 and my brakes are perfect. no fade. Back to the way the were. I can actually panic stop at a light now.( like to scare the depends off the snowbirds)
