wrung off a lug nut stud.... how to fix?

Rotated my tires today. Set the torque wrench to 100 ft/lbs and the stud just came off like it was taffy. Crap. I tried another and the same thing- it just kept turning. So I backed it down to 80 ft/lbs and the other 3 wheels did just fine. So how about putting new studs in the one front hub? I need to do new pads and rotors anyway, are the studs in the rotor or behind it?

Did the same thing on my Tacoma, I think the studs are behind.

Take off the breaks, (rotor too) and I think there is a backing dust cover, that that off if there is a bring out the big boy hammer! :biggrin2:

The torque spec is 83 ft lbs.

Thanks for the inputs! I'm sure one of the tire shops probably over torqued them with an air wrench in the past.

I'll get some new studs and lug nuts. I read that I can just punch out the stud without having to remove the hub- that's good news.

That's correct. I had to do 3 of them from a screw up. You can get them at NAPA, that's where I got mine and I think it was 5.00 for 2 lugs and studs, not completely sure. Its relatively cheap though.

Thanks, I'll make the trek to napa then. OEM toyota online prices are $5.85 per nut and $2.86 per stud. So.... $9 x 6 = expensive.
