WTB 3rd gen roof rack

Looking to get a low-profile roof rack for a 2000 4Runner. I have the factory roof rails but would prefer to replace or mount a longer rack up top rather than attach a basket but I'm open to options.

I am definitely interested to see what you think. I have seen racks similar to that one you linked, seems it may be made somewhere and then branded differently? It's a modular rack that you put together and mount right? Please let me know how it works out, thanks.

Had a rockymountainracks matterhorn for about six months now on my 98. I love it. It's a nice, low profile, platform style rack that's good for a variety of uses. Would strongly recommend. The guys that run the business are easy to work/communicate with as well. Only 2 downsides I've noticed: loud at highway speeds with a strong crosswind (normal hwy driving conditions it's not loud), and it comes in bare, brushed, aluminum (will have to get it powdercoated or paintedhwell

Have you strapped a bunch of stuff up there yet? I'm picturing an action packer, gas cans, camp gear, stuff like that. I'm wishing I didn't fill up the entire back of the 4Runner with camp stuff when we go because researching these racks has made me realize how expensive they can be. Just wondering if this is the best solution or how you like the utility of the rack itself

Received & installed the Antero Ext today. I don’t need a full length rack so this was a great option for me. I really like the looks and functionality of this rack. When my bumper comes in I’ll get the side rails on the rack powder coated when I do the bumper.

That rack all Al? It reminds me of a nice bike rack I once had from 1UP. Looks nicely machined and solid. You can have it powdercoated? I am not up to speed on which metals work best with pc. That rack is definitely a contender.

Something I didn't really think about is what impact a rack will have on my mpg. Any thoughts? I already have a pretty short range on my 4runner. I'll be entering this zone where I get a rack to carry gas so I can go farther but carrying the gas affects how far I can go.

The rack is all aluminum with stainless hardware. I’m pretty sure it can be powder coated, if not I’ll go a different route. Any rack and additional weight will impact gas mileage. I opt for this rack instead of the full length for several reasons. One I don’t need a full rack 2 I don’t want to deal with any additional wind noise 3 more of an impact on gas mileage and the full rack is more expensive.
Everyone has different needs so it’s great that there are many options to choose from out there. I’d buy this rack again for my particular purpose.

Thanks again, appreciate the info. I'm leaning toward a 1/2 rack or basket type solution I think. I really just want to be able to strap some larger boxy or bagged camping items up there to free up room in the back. Being able to attach some gas cans would be great if I need it since I only get about 250 miles on a tank. I like the idea of an awning but I'm not sure it's worth doing a full rack just to be able to strap an awning to it.
