If you are looking for a 99-02, I have found several that are a better deal. What is on your must have list (like auto/5sp, color matched fender flares, etc)?

My must haves are pretty simple: Automatic, cloth seats, and <175K miles. Oh, and a sunroof too but I'm pretty sure that is standard on all Highlander models.

E-locker would be a nice bonus, but definitely not necessary.

Also, since I listed it I had the new OEM TPS installed, IACV and TB cleaned.

Once again runs flawless, no CEL and back up to 20-21 MPG highway.

If I don't sell it I will ship it out to San Francisco. I need to stop putting miles on my Supra.

Any way to get more detailed pics? I'm from Wisconsin, and I know rust is problematic where we are from. Especially for a 14 YO car...

Do you not look yourself? I was able to find a good 4runner within 2 weeks of looking. I use Searchtempest to search most of craigslist, I would suggest widening your parameters, nothing on a 3rd gen is too die for, My only stipulations were no rust and stick and cheap, The year to year options on these are nothing special (I've owned a 97 and 99). Searching for a 99 to 00 highlander in my opinion is stupid, everyone who sells them thinks they have gold and want ridiculous money for them, i would suggest a regular SR5 and adding the hood scoop later.

There is surface rust on the undercarriage. The only part of the body it affects is the left part of the rear bumper (which I am replacing if I keep it - $45 shipped online).

However the surface rust hasn't affected the diffs, suspension, ball joints, rack & pinion, etc from being serviced in any way. Pretty minor case. I plan on taking a wire wheel to it and putting some kind of rust-prevention or rust-converter on it in the future.

I could get a 96-98, or 2000-2002, but its not what I really want. If I got one, I would have to get:

Sport Hood, painted $650 installed
99 Fender Flares: $700 + Installed
ARB Locker: $1300 installed
1' OME kit: $700 installed
Diff Kit: $150 installed
Painted bumpers: $400 painted and installed


So for an extra $3900 above buying a car for, lets say, $5000, i'm in it for $8900 and haven't even gotten repairs, tires, wheels, sound system, etc. So the question is, Why would I go with anything but a 99 Highlander with e-locker. They are out there, but a lot of IJM and not black. Ill find a $5000 99 highlander with elocker (Which I found one yesterday, just waiting on callback from Carmax inspection paperwork).

John, everyone has their own version of what 4runner they like. We visualize how it will look when we get done building it the way we want. You're right, I could go with another year and build it from there, but the cost involved is not worth it compared to waiting for that one to show up. I have plenty of time, my company car is boring as hell but it gets me around until that time.

Oh and I never answered your question. Yes, I'm still on the web right now looking, which is a sad thing for a guy to be doing on a Saturday night... Using cars.com, autotrader.com, carsoup.com, carfinder.com, craigslist.org, autotempest.com, adhuntr.com, oodle.com, ebaymotors.com, carsforsale.com, and so on. I am in school 15 credit hours this semester and work full time and a half. So searching every night is tough, but I'm trying.

Locker came from 96-00, and your quote on the black SR5 flares is very high as well, sets usually go for $150-$250 and take 1 hour to install. I'm trying to help you here, but what you are looking for you have set yourself up to overpay, and dredge through shitty trucks that people think are worth good money. I'd say you are looking at $1k difference to get a non sport model up to your standard as long as it came with the locker, which again I see no need for a locker on DD, or mild trail truck.

Hey if you can find a complete flare kit for $150-250 post some links. The cheapest I have seen was $697 with the mudflap kit for the front. Why do you assume it going to be my DD? I have a company car to commute daily. This thing will spend most of the time on the trail, so a locker is a plus.

Because most people I know who buy the truck with the intention of it not as a daily driver and mainly as a trail rig will buy something with solid front and rear axles, like a Jeep (but not limited too). These trucks are a great compromise offroader, but not what I would buy if used purely offroad. A lot of the people I know with these trucks daily drive them, If we were here talking about an old land rover I would assume its not a daily driver.

Yeah if you see any pop up let me know. I just found a 2000 SR5 with locker, 160k miles, and carfax shows an extensive service history, including waterpump/timing belt 1800 miles ago. We will see how loose the $5600 price is.

Don't forget to search for 4 runner with a space! "4runner" and "4 runner" will give you different results, It all depends on what the seller has in their ad.
