WTF with Navigation?

MY 2015 SR5 has the Entune Premium w/ Nav. I always have it set for 'quick' time. It's been flawless until recently the navigation seems pretty imprecise. It 'froze' on me the other day and I had to restart it and several times recently it has sent me on very 'roundabout' routes where there were clearly shorter/quicker ways to get there (In one case taking me by the street entrance and around the block 1/2 mile and coming in from the other end of the street). Other times it proclaims 'I arrived at the destination' but I have to use my phone app to find out I'm over a 1/4 away from it. Maybe it's coincidence. I thought I'd see if anybody else was experiencing similar things.

You might want to relook the settings or how it is configured, they may have changed when you restarted the application. The quick time may not be the default now.

Hi mmurphy77,

To answer you question:
"...I thought I'd see if anybody else was experiencing similar things..."
YES! there are many here that are experiencing the very same symptoms as you are having! Solution... may be one of two; depending on the problem.

(1) The firmware that drives your navi-system may have become damaged as a result of normal ware-n-tear e.g. you received a bad automatic update that caused a file to be illegible (could not be read XERROR) Solution: R&R Entune software; have the dealership do it or you may be able to download the file yourself... Call your dealership and ask if it is available online or if you can bring it in for a O.S. R&R/ X-fer.

(2) You may only need an ECU Reset. Step one: Locate a fuse in the main relay/fusebox (under hood) labeled RAD 20A. Pull that single fuse and leave it out for minimum of four hours; this can be done once your truck is parked for the night so as not to cause any inconvenience. The vehicle can still be driven with the fuse pulled but the audio system will be disabled during this time (needs 4 hours to drain completely!).

Favorable results have been reported after following these procedures about 98% of the time; nearly half of the time the solution was option one, and about half of the time option Two yielded a favorable result! Leaving only a two % marginal failure of the Panasonic USA equipment to be at fault! PS: Please be sure to leave us some feed back once you find out what the trouble is; it'll help us to zero in on some of the many others with similar equipment issues, Best to you!

on my 2016 T4R the nav system does not show speed limit on the display. I set this to show , but nothing appears 700 miles on it.

I have a Garmin nav unit that shows this info which IMO works better than this OEM nav unit .

also this has a year old nav program in it. I was finding that the exit # where not showing correctly on a road that had been changed last year.

how to update this or correct it ? thanks for any help .

No nav system is perfect. Ford users complain about Sync, Audi/VW users complain about their RNS systems, Jeep users complain about the MyGig and Uconnect systems, etc so on and so forth until the cows come home. Some show posted speed limits, some show traffic, some show weather, some show fuel prices and some show fingerprints while others do not.

Point is.. don't expect nav systems that are perfect. They get you from point A to B? Then it's doing its job....and that's what it was designed for.

And they break as does Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, Android operating systems, etc.

thoroughly unimpressed with entune NAV.... was so excited to have it in dash.... now wish I saved the $$$$ I use my phone

never had an issue with Sync..... I prefer my Garmin over all of them

Exactly. I don't know why OEMs can't figure this out. I have also found the Entune NAV to be terrible. Mine likes to make me do circles before I get to my destination. However, even my Google Maps app on my iphone has its own glitchy moments but that is what I use 99% of the time if I need navigation.

OP- I would make sure you have the latest update and/or a master reset of the system.

Hi catrains,

I'd say, select option (#2) in the above post... that will RESET the navi firmware back to it's DEFAULT factory settings!

Cheers

it worked ! pulled fuse last night. today I get the speed limit on the bottom with the street name.

twice however the speed limit did not show . so I hit the options then the go back and then the speed limit showed ...

I did not change setting of the options on the navi screen just entered and exit. then it showed up the speed.

Thanks .

Perhaps the 'going in circles' is a feature put in there so that people can see that sweet ride going back and forth until they take the hint and go buy one for themselves. :D

I did not hate sync. I loved the posted speed limit for areas where physical signs are purposely missing. Voice recognition was lacking somewhat and it was a bit glitchy with Samsung Android phones when using BT radio. I never encountered a missing road or address with it.

Does it have to be 4 hours? I just pulled it tonight. (10:45pm) Thanks.

Hi daanbc,

YES! If you decide to reconnect the audio system/navi power 'BEFORE' the circuitry/current storing devices drain, you'll have to start the process over from the start! That's a safety feature to prevent everything e.g., radio station pre-sets, navigation stored addresses, compass calibration, clock... from resetting when your mechanic is working on the vehicle and has to disconnect the battery to service it. I pull the fuse when I know that I'm in for the night; it takes 2 minutes to remove and to replace it so give it what it needs to reset.

Best

I pulled it last night. (first one at top in middle of board. the 20A ) Placed it back this morning. Took it for a drive around the block, still no speed showing and ALL my settings were still saved? I looked at the cover to make sure I pulled the right fuse, what gives?

It's 2016. I expect my in dash nav to get me there efficiently. I have never had a fraction of the issues with my wife's Ford Edge that I have had with my 4Runner.

Agreed, it is 2016 but what we expect and the reality of what OEM nav units are today are vastly different. What might not bother you with the nav in the Edge might bother someone else. I'm not talking about OS/firmware malfunctions but functionality in general. Unit errors should be weeded out by updates and/or warranty work. I've owned many types of vehicles with various types of OEM nav units and fact is that each type of owner finds faults with their nav units. Some love them, others hate them.

I've had google maps fail on a trip to the mountains where two miles to my cabin were non-existent on the map. I've had Waze poop on detours. I've had apple maps try to get me to U-turn when all I had to do was go up to the light and catch a side street. So even phone based maps and nav software are with issue from time to time. HERE maps was pretty reliable when navigating Europe with very little hiccups however so according to my experience it was the best that I've had to deal with on long trips but I'm sure someone out there hates it.

While manufacturers should work harder to figure out what these units should be there should also be the understanding that there is no pleasing everyone. Just not possible.

Hell, Alpine released the X109-WRA for Wranglers and owners that complained about their head units? The screen is too big now.. It'll get stolen. It's not detachable. There are no topo-maps.

I wish the screen was a little larger in the 4Runner but that's just me. The girlfriend thinks it's a "cute size"..

Are you sure that fuse says: RAD FUSE 20A? Please be sure; can't imagine that circuit will take more than 4 hrs to reset/DEFAULT!

Tell you what,

Do it again, but this time disconnect the NEG battery terminal (4 hr minimum)! Let us know how you make out!

Cheers
