X-REAS can be replaced with normal suspension parts. and the removal can be free if you do it yourself. there are multiple write-ups here on how to do it, its very easy. just search for it. also look in the suspension sticky for more info.

TLDR, no. a new XREAS system is in the $13-1500 range and you're way better off ripping out the system and installing new suspension. eibach has a pro-truck line of shocks that are great for this purpose. they work with the stock springs so you don't have to replace those if you don't want to. lots of people use bilstein 5100s because they are tried and true, but the eibachs are an outstanding alternative. or you can spend $$$$$ and go with king, icon, etc. so many options.

XREAS uses a hydraulic fluid to cross link pairs of shocks on opposite corners of the frame.
A bunch of that fluid started leaking out of a seam in the left front shock one day. A week later it started making noise and you could feel it not absorbing bumps any more. Changed all 4 out. Made a huge improvement over stock.

my x reas didnt leak, but it was getting floaty, at 163k, i decided to take it out and do bilstiens 5100s and moog fj springs, big difference in the feel now, no more soft floaty feel, just feels like a truck, like the trd/bilstien equipped tacoma.

IF you have RAS and want to keep it you need Bilsteins 4600 HD in the rear. its the same stock length as the XREAS shocks. anything else will stretch the airbags. Go with 5100s in the front to level it out.
If you plan to lift, rip out XREAS, do the metaltech airbag to coil conversion in the rear, and 5100s all around with FJ springs.

Not all XREAS has airbags in the rear though... I believe that was only an option on Limited editions? OP has a Sport, so he doesn't have airbags.
I took mine to the dealer because the XReas was leaking. They wanted $3400 to replace the entire system. My 4Runner is an 03 with over 150K on it. No way was I paying that kind of money.
I talked to the Service advisor and told him what I have read on this message board. I told him I could get Bilstein replacement shocks from Shock Warehouse. He said they would install them for $110 per wheel. Took me a while to get the shocks, but when I got them I took it to the dealer for installation. The total bill at the dealer was under $500 and the shocks were around $250. So new Bilstein's all way around for under $850.
Vehicle rides much smoother. It was really bouncing before I had the new ones installed. I got the Bilstein 4600's all the way around on mine. That's what Shock Warehouse recommended for a stock 4Runner with no lift.

My X-REAS failed (back in 2010) on my 03 Limited at 138,000 km (or 85,750 miles). There was a leak in the system - in the line behind the Driver’s Side Centre Control Absorber. Leak was likely caused by corrosion of the line due to road salt used up here during our Canadian winters.
Fluid that had dripped onto the driveway was the first indicator of some sort of problem. As more fluid leaked out of the system, the suspension became worse.
I removed the entire X-REAS system (too costly to replace - but the lines are still there), and installed the standard 4Runner SR5 OEM suspension (to keep it relatively stock). This was the most cost effective repair for me at the time.
In hindsight, I might have sourced a quality aftermarket shock that was less expensive than the OEM Toyota shocks - but I did not have the luxury of having time to "shock shop" due to the nature of the X-REAS system failure.
