XENON vs Halogen Bulbs

I was wondering about this but saw something that said you can't use xenon blubs in light housing that were made for halogen. What are your thoughts?

Halogen housing were not made to handle the extra light that HIDs put out.

Can you put HIDs in a reflector housing? Sure. Will you have glare? Yes. The amount of glare depends. It's not always as dramatic as people make it out to be.

The ideal way to get HIDs into your 3rd Gen would be to do a retrofit. They improve output tremendously and eliminate glare.

There are XENON CHARGED BULBS - not the ebay thing. Manufacturers claim the are whiter than ordinary halogen and are DOT approved.
I just don't have experience with them.

When we talk about xenon, we generally refer to the HID kits..lika bulb plus ballast. and the bulbs are charged with xenon gas(if I'm correct)

But now xenon is used in incandescent too.

if your talking about HIDs in a regular factory(or equivalent) housing then technically is illegal, im pretty sure DOT regs state that if you are using HIDs you need to have projector housings. but can you use and HID in a standard halogen housing?, sure will it work like they are supposed to?, no...

hey man there is a good video in my build thread below that shows the craptastic light output Xenon/HID bulbs give out in stock housing.

However there are those halogen bulbs that say xenon charged as well. IMO the colord bulbs are bad news, especially in bad weather. Back in the day when i had this old beater i had some green bulbs that said xenon charged on the box. they were terrible as far as seeing anything

This was just when colored bulbs were just comin out too, on-coming traffic would freak out, they wouldn't know what to do seeing a different color light commin at them... so they flashed me all the time. these things wern't even bright.

HID's without a projector (retrofit) are painfully bright and the light goes everywhere. Ever drive at night and you have to squint because the guy behind you is blinding? That's HID bulbs in our housings. Notice how that doesn't happen when a Range Rover pulls up behind you? That's projectors.

Go with a retrofit or just get some SilverStar Ultra's. I've got SilverStars, bright white light, but not blinding, beats stock by 100% without a retrofit.

i just run a set of IPF bulbs, they are 85/110w and 5500k. a couple of guys asked me how i liked my HID and i have told them they arent HID, they look like HIDs but arent, and you dont have the side affects of the losing your high beams or warm up, and they dont blind the piss outta people (unless im using my highs, which ive only turned on once). id recommend either IPF or PIAA bulbs, the Silvania SilverStars are ok but for the same price you can get a set of PIAAs and they are much better(they last longer are brighter and are more resilient to vibration and off roading)
