XM Radio to Factory Radio

Hello All,

Just got a new 06 SR5 with the base radio\cd player. It's the Type 1 player according to the manual. Anyway, my question is...is there a way to convert this deck so I can get XM? I know Crutchfield makes an adapter they call the "XM Direct Smart Digital Adapter" but it says in their descriptino that the radio has to receive Radio Data System (RDS) signals (I guess so it can display what is playing). Does anyone know if the Type one has this or how I could find out??

I'd love to get XM radio somehow and I don't mind upgrading the deck, but I don't want to lose the steering wheel controls. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

From what I understand the 2006 radios support XM by using what will be labeled the 'Toyota Smart Digital Adaptor' which is also an XMDirect product. The only ones with RDS would use the 'RDS Smart Digital Adaptor' which is different. As far as I know, the new non-navigation radios do not have RDS. If you want to see what I'm talking about go to www.audiovox.com or www.terk.com. Both are listed.

Both are supposed to come out 1Q06, which is over tomorrow, so I think they should revise to later this year. I'm patiently awaiting the RDS one for my 2005. Right now I'm using my MiFi in a cradle. Luckily its hardwired now, so its not as ugly as it was.
 
I just looked at the XM Direct Toyota Adapter and under Features it says....

"Allows XM service to be seamlessly installed into the interface of satellite radio ready car stereo"

which probably means that it won't work with my base deck since it's not XM ready. :(
 
Cpayne5 - can you please give me some more details about that? Please excuse my ignorance, but what is HU? Do I have to replace the radio or is this an adapter made for Scion that'll also work on my 4R'r? Any idea on cost?

I'm sorry, HU = headunit (the radio). You can pick them up on eBay for less than $100 and they plug right in to the 4Runner harness. It's a 20 minute swap. You can also use your steering wheel controls. Scion has a kit that plugs into the Scion HU that gives you XM. You can get these on eBay for ~$300.

I went the cheap way and mounted a Roady in the sunglasses flip down. I don't get the text on the HU, but I'm happy with it. I saved ~$200 doing it this way.

cpayne5 - can you post some pics of your Roady mounted in the sunglass holder. I decided to purchase a Roady XT over the weekend and now have to figure out where to mount it. Doesn't look like it'll fit in the sunglass holder.

Yeah, I don't know about the XT fitting, but the Roady2 fits perfectly.

This is not my exact setup, but its the same basic idea...
