When my 4th gen was new, I bought the OEM XM package from a local Toyota dealer that I had a business account with. I can't remember exactly what the cost was but I don't think it was too bad. Everything was included and plugged right in.
Now I have a Pioneer touch screen in the 4th gen that works and sounds so much better. I also have the XM module for it but I rarely listen to XM anymore. In fact, it finally is going to expire and I'm not going to renew. To me, the stations kinda suck and the sound quality seems to get worse and worse. I usually stream Spotify or Pandora if I have cell service or listen to one of my playlists off my Iphone.

I had an add on module directly wired to the my radio. It has since died and was replaced with a Kenwood unit with Sirius controls.

Whirring noise on Sirius
I have my Sirius set up like Morphius above. I have used a cassette adapter and now a GTA car kit type direct into the CD harness input . Using either the 3.5 mm jack or the iPhone power input and before that the cassette adapter I get an annoying whirring which seem to vary in intensity to my engine rpms. I remember a similar issue with my 1970's era Pontiac ( my first car) with an aftermarket cassette deck (pretty cool in 1979). Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this sound or is it something that I have to live with. I am willing to go to a new head unit. Does anyone have a good suggestion that is a plug in replacement that has Sirius or XM module built in or does that have to be purchased separately like it was on the Clarion unit on my boat. Thanks. I may have to start a new thread to get responses but I wanted to get responses from the previous posters on this thread if I could.
I actually found my own answer, alternator noise, and I will check if my power wire and input wire are running parallel and make sure they don't.

That "whirring" sound that increases and decreases with your RPMs is usually indicative of a "ground loop". In the car stereo world, it usually means that something is not grounded properly OR, the ground of your amp and the ground of your head unit are too close together. Not sure why you would be getting a ground loop hum from the 3.5 jack and/or a cassette adapter. Strange.

I believe the ground loop is caused by the wiring of the Sirius Satellite tuner box like I have which is like Morphius' above. I would rather replace my head unit with one that is more modern and contains a usb port and a XM receiver or is Xmas ready. I looked at the wiring today and I would have to remove the whole center console just to check the wires. I could just plug in a new head unit if one was wired similar to the OEM unit in the same amount of time and have much more capability for a few hundred bucks. Anyone have have suggestions? I will try to search for it.
