Thought about windows 7 any? I like it.

If you need something to get you by for now you can always load up Ubuntu for free, with open office. You can even run both if you want to dual boot.

Dual-boot fun, yes have done it on project machines. This Intel D865 is a P4/800 bus. goes back a ways. Seagate 320 GB is 3 years old. I game a bit. I found XP Pro SP-2 OEM for $97. In the beginning I ran a 'licence office copy' but it would not validate or let me run MS Essentials A/V. A Trojan took me down, cleaned up as best as I could, no System Retore or most window Programs were still bad. format was the way to go. thanks.

I have XP disk that came with my machines. It can't be activated in another PC. MS can detect hardware difference.

WINDOWS 8 is out for download just days ago. Its Free !! atleast you can use it for the mean time for surfing the net and install some apps. It can run in a 3 year old pc and i think this is the most backward driver compatible windows.

Running Windows 8 now and its fun!... FREE!

someone I know running it on old old d865PERL mobo.
Windows Dev Center

Installed in dual boot in one of my machine:

Wow, think I can d/l it to this AMD (P3 1.5) save to CD and load the D865? (my 865PERl died, this is a 865 busines type board). unemployed, really need my machine back for job search. think I can do it???? thanks much, Randy

Windows 8 did install in my Celeron 1.5 laptop in less than 20 mins. wow! this is fun.

Time will come that MS will not anymore release updates for this developer software (windows 8), then its the same time span where I clean install another copy. MS will release win 8 next year so, we can run this pre-beta for longer time..then upgrade to beta version just like the win 7. I think we can still run free OS for 2 years.

My son run starcraft 2 installed in win 7 partition, Win 8 is fast and uses less system resources. A beta version video driver is also available for my radeon and its doin fine for games.

OK, I will try to d/l it to this AMD machine and save for my P4. wish me luck, actually tomorrow morning. tired from a long day. My other forums are more like, use Ubuntu. I guess they don not game much. thanks again.

Problem loading XP. I have gone thru SetUp about 4 times, after reboot it is not loading windows but starting SetUp again. No errors. Load to C drive, yes to format, ideas, it's beens years since I have Loaded XP.

booting from disc or hd?

This morning I pulled it, formatted in another PC. Scan for errors, etc. 320 GB shows 298 GB.?? Reinstalled, with new ribbon cable, switched out d drive to a basic CD Rom. Same problem, will not reboot to loading windows after setup. BIOS shows everything in order. running out of ideas. ??

I have a 80 GB WD 7200 that was used on this same board originally. I did a full format and ran it thru Seagate Utility to take out the partition. Format again and loaded in P-4. XP loaded just fine, but will not launch. I get the error window of Safe Mode or windows Normal. None of the choices will launch Windows. Multiple reboots for good measure. So it boils down to needing a new HD. fun. thanks everyone. I did get rehired for two months. Start in October.

Just a note to say Thanks All. I d/l a Activekilldrive program, wrote zeros to the 320 GB HD and loading XP Pro right now. Strange HD shows 127 GB, I'll fix that later. fun times on a budget
