Xreas and warranty timing out

I have about 10K left on my 100k warranty.

Can Toyota service to inspect for issues (early leaks wear) or are issues either there or not with this suspension?

Call in for an appointment and say your truck is riding weird. Obviously they will look at the shocks and see the leak (IF they are leaking). Since its under warranty, it should be replaced free of charge! If all is fine, cool, BUT expect them to fail. They eventually do. Although I've seen some with their 4R go until 150,000 without any problems. I replaced my XREAS a few months back (all 4 shocks) and it was expensive. $1100 IIRC. My warranty had run out several months BEFORE the leak was discovered at Toyota. :crybaby:

Most warranty companies consider shocks/struts to be a wear item like brake pads and therefore aren't covered. Call and find out first to see if they're even covered by your company.

I'm assuming he has some Toyota Platinum warranty. If he doesn't, then most likely no. Pretty sure the XREAS shocks are covered (by the extended warranty Toyota offers).

That's really surprising. Good for Toyota, in that case anyways. Most aftermarket ones will not tho.
 
Thanks for the information. I have the platinum warranty from Toyota. We had a group buy here some years ago. Will check with the dealer to ensure coverage and take your suggestions.

So at oil change the tech noticed the left front strut is leaking. from all I have read it's covered under the platinum warranty. Called them back and waiting for the information from this dealer. May have dodged a bullet.
 
Dealer says Left strut gets replaced and if others appear to be failing they will replace those as well under the warranty. He said it's rare that the whole system fails usually one front and one rear.
 
I asked the service guy this question. He explained that the bottom of the XREAS system is intact however the top of the shock is leaking so and accordingly only the shock that has the leak needs to be replaced and since it is not leaking from the XREAS component chamber the system is ok.

Thoughts?

Seems like the older shock could be soft and the new one firmer, which could lead to a non-ideal ride experience, but I don't really know.

Agreed. I also thought that the XREAS system was a sealed system and that you can't replace just one shock.
 
Oh I see. I will ask that question if the age of the other shocks 3 of them will be affected by added a brand new one?
 
This group buy extended warranty was $835.00 and it sounds as if it will pay for itself by 100K. The tech did not tell the service manager that he saw a leak which pissed him off to no small extent. In any case I will ask your questions and appreciate them.

It would be nice if anyone can post the procedure on how to replace the shock and/or the whole system. I've heard that you can NOT replace just one shock, but in pairs (crossed). I've also heard that once you replace the shock (or 4 or 2), you can only change it ONCE, after that, you have to replace the whole system.
 
I am going over to Toyota Carslbad for a 2nd opinion. Based upon what I have read opinions are split if the whole system or just 1 front and 1 rear should be replaced. Will post update. cost so far is around $2,600. for complete replacement and is covered under warranty.
 
Got back from Carlsbad Toyota. Nice people. HUGE waiting area. Ryan confirmed that they should replace the left front affected and right rear and that Poway was planning to do this per the request for the warranty coverage. I called Poway and John was very collaborative and helpful....rather make a friend than prove a point. Taking it in tomorrow. Will ask if Toyota would consider covering the other set see what they say...
