XREAS. Dealer wants to replace front shocks only.

I couldn't find the exact answer with the search button so here's my first post.

My 2011 LE is at the dealer right now for the 60k service. I had them look at the shocks because they showed some slight leaking and freeway handling started to feel unstable lately. I have the extended warranty and want them to replace all four shocks. The service advisor insists that they only need to replace the fronts. It was my understanding that if you replace one shock in the XREAS system you have to change the opposite one as well. The rear shocks are showing some oil residue with dirt sticking to it but the fronts are worse.

What do you guys think?

As the system is cross-linked, a leak in one shock should require not only a replacement of that shock, but should also require its cross-linked match to be replaced.

If both fronts are leaking, then all four shocks should be replaced imo.

Stick to your guns with the dealer/service advisor!

Replacing two front struts should be fine as long as they disconnect at check valves. I've done it in my 2004 Sports without any issues. GL

It depends on how much fluid has leaked out. If just a few drops, then replacing just the fronts should be OK as long as they are disconnected only at the check valves.

If a large amount (don't know what constitutes "large amount") of fluid has leaked, then the whole system (not just shocks, but tubing, reservoirs, dampers, etc) needs to be replaced to restore the system to full operation. There is no way to add fluid in the field.

I would try just the front shocks first, and evaluate performance afterward. If it is still substandard, then probably the whole system will need replacement.

That sounds fair. Definitely wouldn't call the fluid loss a large amount. It wasn't dripping on the ground but left wet spots on the shock body.

Still waiting for them to call back. Supposedly the "warranty inspector" has to look at the vehicle before authorizing the repair.
