XREAS Emergency!?! 1" Spacer lift

NTB installed my 1" spacer lift and drained all of the fluid out of my XREAS suspension. The truck is bouncing up and down. Can Fluid be added back? Toyota said they need to replace the shocks and it'll take 7 hours! Does anyone know how to repair / replace fluid for the XREAS suspension? Thanks!

it's suppose to be a sealed system, but the idiot pulled the lines out and the fluid leaked everywhere...seal is broken. the XREAS system (which I love!!) is completely screwed up now. :bash: NTB

Damn dood that is no good at all. Did he pull both sides? If he did, I am afraid your system is shot front and back. The resevoirs may be empty also. When the system is compromised, the whole setp goes (front, resevoir, and rear).

The system cannot be filled nor can you bleed them if you filled them with fluid and then re-attached them.

There are a few guys here and at toyota120.com that pulled the whole system off succesfully w/out spilling a single drop. You may need to advertise there and see what happens. I'd just go back to NTB and have them pay for the 'ef' up through toyota

sorry to hear that someone messed up "big time" your xreas. and it sure sounds like a need for a new xreas.

im thinking why did he need to drain it? he probablly doesnt know that it is a sealed system.

Yes, www.toyota120.com has detailed tech writeups re XREAS. So after countless searches and conversations with different Toyota dealers, the conclusion is that my entire system is wasted. The monkey that pulled my gas filled front shocks out let the fluid drain without saying a word and then broke a lug nut, forgot to let me know this as well. The Toyota stealer was glad to see me however. The service adviser never heard of XREAS, and after speaking to his team mechanic, he suddenly became an expert and wanted me to bring the truck in to replace the system. I bet a $2000 cost here??

Do I have NTB replace anything? Or do I let them pay Toyota to replace the system? I still have warranty, so I could have NTB remove the spacer and see if a dealer could replace without knowing? Because the system front right is connected to the rear left (like an X), will all 4 shocks need to replaced?? hummm

Anyhow, the XREAS is a sealed system. The spacer can be added if done right. You can actually remove the entire system (with wheels off the ground) and not spill a drop of fluid. There are many writeups on this.
I informed the NTB monkey that the system should not be taken apart before hand. Because I did not "monitor" the job, this is going to be painfull. Truck has 18,000 miles and it did not need a new system.
Well, thanks for the feedback...

NO! Don't even let them touch it or inspect it. Politely, let them know they wrecked it. Give them a written estimate from the dealer and include a loaner/rental (you shouldn't be driving an unsafe vehicle, it will unevenly wear your tires, blah, blah, etc...) They can provide a P.O. or deal with the stealer who will be sending them the bill. Period. The only other dealing with them should be in small claims court, if necessary. Bottom line, don't let them put another wrench on your truck.
Also, don't risk being dishonest with a warranty. It is their fault, not yours.

You're right Kmvreter. Good advice and thanks for the feedback. At least the stealer has access to the TRD database and technical overviews, and they do understand the system, etc...I'll follow up with a report

Why compromise your integrity by trying a fraudulent warranty claim? NTB has insurance to cover just such faulty workmanship - their insurance will cover it (NTB is big company now - part of the Sears/Kmart Corporation) Actually serves them right after all the auto repair shenanigans theat Sears has pulled over the years!

:iagree:

Better that route than possibly tarnish your relationship with your local dealership, especially since it was the NTB's fault.

Perfectly stated !!!!!

Report: NTB has purchased the two front shocks from the Toyota dealer (should be here in 2 days). They forgot to add the 3 canisters (?), but the dealer has these in stock. NTB has pulled down the service specs and diagram from somewhere (?) and is consulting with the NTB service advisor on Monday. They "think" they can replace the canister and install the shocks correctly this time.
I received a quote from the dealer for $1700 for 7 hours of labor and parts (they do not need to replace the rear shocks). After reviewing, I took the quote into NTB and told them that it will take nearly a full day for the experts to work this issue out. And after the "posts" I received from you guys, I told them that it makes more sense for the dealer to work on the system, not NTB. Since NTB has ordered the shocks, the price tag drops down to $1300 (and me being a nice guy will offer a 10% off coupon for service - the young NTB manager seams a bit scared here and maybe this will help cushion the blow).
Now, I have not asked the dealer if they can continue the work AND make sure the Burtman Ind 1" front spacer will also be added. I'm sure they work with me, or we'll find another dealer (there are 3 in Austin). My truck spent the night at the dealer as my initial plan was to have NTB add the spacer and Toyota to do an alignment, change front/rear diff and transfer case oil and lube shaft (another thread here, but my truck only has 18000 miles / 3 yrs old and apparently the power steering fluid was corroded so that got that changed as well).
Well, it appears things are moving in the right direction. Hey, I get 2 new front shocks, right.
I'll post after the trucks out of the shop and follow up.
Thanks all for advice on "integrity" and "suggestions" on how to handle. Good stuff!!!
Thomas

Could you explain why they needed to order 2 front shocks and 3 cannisters to fix the xreas system?

Good luck with getting it all worked out!

Thanks ProMed.

The XREAS shock is a factory sealed system and the fluid can not be refilled, so they are ordering new ones. To be honest, I am not sure what the "canisters" are. I believe they contain fluid. I'll figure that out Tuesday just exactly what it is and why I need new ones...

actually, these canisters are resevoirs for the fluid in either the front or rear to take from when needed (ie - hard turns ). If you knelt down on each side of your truck and looked right up next to your frame, there they are

I don't understand why the dealership said 3 though when only two are needed

Sorry not trying to question NTB, just better understand the xreas system, but why did they need to order two shocks? If the entire system was drained why wouldn't they need to order all 4 of them since they are inter-connected?

that's what I thought also, that they would have to order 4 new shocks, but they said because the rear shocks were not drained that they are fine. Is the dealer incorrect? I wonder...

I think the your dealer has never dealt with the Xreas because if the two fronts were drained that means it pulled all the fluid from the resevoirs also... if the two rear tires were up afully drooped ( ( I am assuming they were) then possibly the two rears didn't drain because they were fully extended which would keep majoirty of the fluid inside the shock.
