XREAS life expectancy

According to Toyota FSM you can. See SP-9, SP-10 and SP-11 pages for removal. SP-12 for install does not call for bleeding or refill. I'm sure new shocks come prefilled.

I'm at 208 and no leaks whatsoever. In my case the shop that did the 1/2 shafts opened the system...

I should yank mine and replace the shocks...

You can open the system as long as truck supported by frame (unsprang and extended shocks).

Pardon the stupid question... How does one check and see if an XREAS system is still working?

I just got mine replaced at 178,000. The front ones were bottom out on speed bumps and after a while steering and braking was affected. I brought the car in they sad the rear ones were leaking....

Not cheap, but the car drives like new now.

Mine just started leaking at all four corners after 2 weeks of high speed gravel road traveling. Ive got 135000 and honestly cant wait to get rid of it, haha

Just took mine out at 80k. Completely screwed up the mount on one of the shocks. The top nut popped off so the mount bent and it was a goner. Replaced it with Icon coilovers and shocks. The Icon stuff rides a lot better. It's significantly stiffer, and off road it feels like the faster you go the smoother it is. There isn't any more body roll, and I actually have more control exiting corners. XREAS seemed cool when I had it, but the Icon stuff is worlds better.

AT 95K miles, my passenger front was leaking ever so slightly. The other 3 shocks were perfectly fine. Anyway, I failed state inspection (but got it passed at another garage...... :naughty: ) Anyway, from what I understand, once they start leaking, it's just a matter of time until it fails. I had mine (all 4) replaced a couple of months ago and she drives/rides like a new truck. Love it. Massively expensive though........... Anyway, apparently you can only replace the shocks ONCE. After that, you have to replace the whole system.

If anyone would like to post the procedures on how to, feel free to do so..... :becky:

I kept the original springs and put in 5100's.

It was a 2 hr job. (buddy has a lift in his import tuning garage)

He wasn't happy when shock oil sprayed all over the shop floor. Front right shock was leaking on inspection after removal.

I just picked up an 07 Sport Edition V6 RWD with 80k. The ride is actually not bad on city streets (coming from a small Acura RSX), but it does tend to feel a bit under damped when going over larger elevation changes. But the oscillation on the highway from the natural swell of the road is pretty severe (almost feels like the suspension is stiff but also under damped - basically a harsh ride). Is this a big indicator of a dead XREAS system? I gave a quick look at the shocks when I bought it, and didn't notice any big leaks, but I guess I need to give it another once over. I'm guessing it's mostly dead from how it feels on the highway.

I can get Bilsteins at wholesale, so I'm thinking of going that route. I honestly wouldn't mind a softer ride if I'm replacing the suspension rather than a firmer one, as I have a "suck your face off fast" 240SX. I just want a comfortable commuter/tow vehicle with the 4Runner. I don't want a lift either. So should I go with some other OEM springs like from a Limited? I see there are aftermarket springs like Moogs and stuff for pretty cheap? Or should I keep my SE stock springs?

I have a 2006 with 70kmiles and the system is feeling mushy. I just ordered a complete Toytec coilover 5100's all pre-assembled and ready to bolt on. Use the discount code to get a few bucks off and install it in your own driveway.....no fuss, no muss! Good luck.

So what's the signs of XREAS failure? Harsh ride on slightly undulating roads? As that's what I'd describe mine as. It generally feels underdamped compared to my 102k mi stock RSX as well, but it's hard to compare a 2700 lb car to a 4500+ lb truck/SUV from a system dynamics point of view.

I guess Bilstein 5100's and stock springs sound good. Might put the front up on the 0.85" perch, or just leave it stock. Mine looks fairly low in the front compared to some other pics I've seen, I wouldn't mind it being like 1/2" higher just to get some more bump travel.

The truck has maybe 3/4" between the FLCA and bumpstop. Doesn't seem normal at all, and the truck looks lower up front than most stock pics I see by maybe an inch or more.

Looks like some Bilstein 5100's up at least 1 perch are in my future. I'll likely just keep the stock springs. I don't want to really lift it in the rear.

You can correct if I am wrong (and if I am, many people WILL correct me) but if the front of your T4R is sagging I think its probably more due to the wear on your coils as they are primarily responsible for your ride height rather than your shocks. Of course, that does not mean that your XREAS is dead.

In my experience, you can get some ride height reduction from shocks completely losing pressure. They do provide some support to the vehicle.

I can't find any leaks on mine, but it definitely drives like things are underdamped.

The OEM springs could be sagging, but I've never seen that happen before, especially on a Japanese vehicle.

I've owned my 4Runner since new and it has always felt underdamped compared to a car. The suspension is relatively soft.

Probably asked before but replacing the xreas shocks with aftermarket ones makes no difference whether or not you have RAS right?

Just to update this instead of posting a new thread: I installed Bilstein 5100's on my 4Runner yesterday. I put the stock springs on the 0.85" perch up front.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE WAY IT DRIVES NOW!!!

The front right was a little moist on the top, and the front left might have been leaking on the hose connection a little. The rears extended fine, but the damping seemed really stiff on compression with a hand test.

The 5100's lifted it up all the way around, and the extra wheel travel in front is great compared to worn out XREAS. I was frequently running into the bump stops with almost no damping up front and a low ride height. I didn't take detailed measurements before I started, but I'd say the fronts lifted up probably 2-2.5" or so, and the rear about 1.5". But I just can't get over how much better the truck rides. It's amazing, and feels very well controlled everywhere. Handling has improved as well, just because there's proper damping on all 4 corners that feels balanced.

BTW - I have 81k miles on mine, so I think the XREAS was pretty dead a while ago given how much better then 5100's feel.

For anybody doing the install, just go ahead and pull the skidplate and front sway bar. I fought for about 45 mins trying to get the stock shock out with the sway in place, and it was not happening. I also suggest removing the lower ball joint bolts and just dropping that to make installing the 5100's easier, as they're almost an inch longer. Other than those two issues, the install was pretty easy. I did have to trim one rubber spacer on the rear, as the 5100 stuff is so long you can just barely thread a nut on the stud with them at stock thickness. They really needed to be just 1/16-1/8" shorter to be able to start the nut without all the planets aligned (I got it on one side, gave up on the other and trimmed 1/8" off the rubber).
