XREAS life expectancy

I have the original xreas, 210k miles. I'm tired of the stiff ride, why on earth Toyota put this system on an off road capable vehicle is beyond me.

I keep hearing Bilstein, but what are you all installing to give it a smooth ride?

Just bought a 2008 limited V8 4runner and the reas system is already shot. probably before I got it, didnt notice a difference from when I got it to the time the problem was found. Had 100,000 miles on it when I got it and was told 1/2 of the system was dry. Ditched that ridiculous system and went with napa shocks and struts. Better ride and way cheaper than the recommended replace it all suggestion from the dealer. My problem started with a "thump" after braking as I released the brakes. Problem is still there but fixed another one......... still no idea what the thump is, any thoughts by anyone? anyone? lol

No one ever seems to have had any problem. One said it is a vaccum caused by the grease in the drive shaft slip yoke. Another said it was part of the rear suspension. I say it is just a 4runner!!! Any easy maintenance item is to replace the sway bar bushing front and rear. Each has 2 bolts with the bushing inside. These can make a clunk as well.

My X-REAS failed on my 03 Limited at 138,000 km (or 85,750 miles). There was a leak in the system - in the line behind the Driver’s Side Centre Control Absorber. Leak was likely caused by corrosion of the line due to road salt used up here during our Canadian winters.

Same situation here on a former NY 2003 Ltd. The lines had corroded to the point where they leaked. When removing the entire system we noticed that s-bends near the front shocks were especially corroded and fragile.

2008 V8 Limited with 115k miles. Both front struts are leaking. Replacing with 5100's. Dealer quote was $4,400 since the whole system needs replaced!

On my 2 4runners the 06 failed at 136000 and the 08 failed at 171000 when the rt rear hit a pothole. Did 6112s and 5160s on both.

So far, I have read that the XREAS fails at different mileages but I haven't read why it fails. Yes, it leaks but what is the main reason for the failure in the first place. Non-maintenance, faulty factory parts, normal wear, lousy design or just the luck of the draw.

I have 187,000 miles on my Sport Edition and the XREAS hasn't failed yet. Eventually, from what I read here, that it will fail. I have been thinking lately of trading it in.

When mine does go, if I still have it which is a realistic possibility, I won't replace it with original parts, as attested to here, as being too costly. I'll just get shocks installed.

Nothing is cheap anymore so one has to go with the least expensive, cost effective way.

It may not be leaking but odds are your ride and handling aren’t what they used to be if you’re at 187K miles. The “X-REAS delete...” post linked in my sig may be of interest.

So far, it rides very well. A friend of mine says that my 2005 4Runner rides better than his new Outback SUV.

But as everyone has said, eventually it'll fail. Then I'll have the pleasure of repairs- oh joy!!

I'd love to get the 5100 set up all around, but with the exception of those who want drastic level/lift, have never seen a coherent suggestion for front/rear springs to go with.

The great thing about 5100's, is that they do work with some aftermarket coils for those looking to lift front and rear.

Thank you, I will def keep this in mind. I recently had to discard X-REAS, and went with all stock, but look forward to doing a 5100 makeover in the near future.

Mine's toast at 154k but I don't know when it went out cuz I just bought it. Rears are both leaking, fronts look ok. Looking to swap for Bilsteins.
