XREAS question for 2010 LE

My brother in law was just told that his XREAS system has a leak and that everything would need to be replaced. This will run him about $3,300. Is it absolutely necessary for the XREAS to be replaced in order to drive around safely or can he continue to drive it, only taking into consideration how fast he takes corners?

Personally I wouldn’t consider it “safe” to drive. I would guess with a leak the handling will continue to deteriorate to the point that safety/handling becomes compromised, hard to say where that point is. It’s not like having one shock go bad since they are linked. Tires will wear prematurely with no shocks to control springs most likely as well.

He can replace it with a set of Bilsteins for less than $1000 with labor, much less if he did it himself. I wouldn’t waste the money replacing xreas.

My X-REAS failed at 138,000 km (or 85,750 miles) on my 03 Limited. There was a leak in the system - in the line behind the Driver’s Side Centre Control Absorber. Leak was likely caused by corrosion of the line due to road salt used up here during our Canadian winters.

Fluid that had dripped onto the driveway was the first indicator of some sort of problem. As more fluid leaked out of the system, the suspension became worse. I would not recommend continuing to drive with a leaking system.

I removed the entire X-REAS system (it was too costly to replace at the time - but the lines are still there), and I had installed the standard 4Runner SR5 suspension (to keep it relatively stock). Only the shocks were replaced. The front coils and RAS (Rear Air Suspension) were retained.

I replace my X-REAS with TRD pro suspension and it is so much nicer.

I also have my stock system which is like new that he can have for free. Lines included.
